A friend gave me this Wesco microscope. It works very well but the bed does not drop down low enough for my taller cartridges.
I got looking at the thing and the base is bolted to the vertical pillar so I cut a piece of plexiglass to go in between and now the bed drops down far enough for even my tallest cartridge.
I removed the parts that I won't be using, the other three object lens and the light apparatus under the bed (not the original light source, that's down in the base). This make getting at the object and positioning my light sources much easier.
I just thought I would share.

like the picture below. You could then observe true stylus wear and use the Shure SEK-2 microscope manual for examples.
That is the view I get now. Thanks.

I have been viewing phono stylus for over 30 years.
The old Olympus Elgeet on the left has the best lens.

That silver color made it totally disappear when I looked at the picture. If I had seen that, I wouldn't have responded the way I did. Sorry.
You're as bad as me! I have two microscopes in Alaska and three microscopes at my Washington State location. I never paid more than $40 for a scope, until I purchased the Shure SEK-2. Recently on eBay, I have seen two Shure scopes go for under $100!
On my homemade lighting system in my post, I had to put a cover over the lights, in order to see the wear patterns. Without the covers, the lighting was too bright. The lights were LEDs, so the covers did not overheat.
I used to enjoy FredJ's posts years ago about proper lighting and magnification, and that's what got me started. We have so many alumni from this asylum that have moved on for one reason or another.
No worries.

Yeah, so many have "moved on". The AA has lost a lot of knowledge. :-(

are those DIY custom incident light sources / reflectors on the WESCO Tre`?
I've not seen those before
regards,
They're just a couple of high intensity goose neck lamps that I use with my microscopes. They get hot so I think I'll look for some leds.

ah, they looked as if they were affixed to the scope base on a custom bracket ... to me anyway
try home depot ... I use these in a clamp on utility light; not too hot

regards,
I think I will just get LEDs for the lamps I already have.
Maybe these.

My goosenecks were Ikea lamps we had around the house.
Same with mine. What I had or what I picked up at yard sales.
I think the dimmer would be good but I will probably just get some LEDs for the lamps I already have.

I had a trinocular 'scope with the third view tube coming out the top (or back, the 'scope got "lost" during my recent move and I do not remember now) and I used it for a 'scope camera.
Later Gator,
Dave
I've seen that set up before. That would be cool.
I hope you find yours.
