I have two adorable Himalayan cats; long haired, with incredibly delicate, thin and tiny hairs. You can sometimes see a single strand of hair floating in the air, it's so light and delicate.
But the problem is, when Im playing records, the strands of hair get pulled in by static and lodge themselves onto my stylus. I've tried everything -- the stylus brush that came with my Denon DL-103, the Magic Eraser, the blue tack. Nothing works. Those tiny hairs remain stuck to the stylus.
Is there a way to remove them? I'm worried that the hair strands may interfere with the stylus as it tracks the grooves. I read somewhere that it is not recommended to use alcohol on the DL-103 stylus, as it may unglue it from the cantilever. Any truth in that?

I've heard claims of hairs that finally required tweezers to pull of a stylus, but never encountered that myself. Though I have seen my share of stubborn fibers, to be sure. What kind of brush do you have? Is it one of those awful small circular pads of short bristles just a couple of mm long (ala Ortofon)? Or does it have longer fibers? I like a long bristle brush (like the one included with Shelter cartridges) because you can get at both the stylus and up & down the cantilever from multiple angles - which is really what you should be doing as part of your normal cleaning. With a bit of persistence this should remove the vast majority of the stubborn hair/fibers. I prefer more rigid bristles (like nylon) over softer/finer bristles (like carbon fiber), because it's really good at knocking crap off the stylus, even gunk that's starting to encrust.
When a good brush is used in combination with a DS Audio or Onzow gel cleaners, I can't imagine any hair still sticking around. And like others, I really like to use a nice cut piece of original Magic Eraser - and you can safely wet the small part you're dipping the stylus into with a drop or 2 of water for extra cleaning/grabbing power. I don't even think the gel cleaners are necessary if you use a good brush and M.E., but having more in the toolkit can't hurt.
Good luck!

You're course of action depends on whether the hair is still attached to the cat....
I keed, I keed! But our dearly departed 15 year old Miniature Schnauzer didn't shed and his replacement won't either. We had a great cat years before I got into audio but it would be tough to have one now.
... is them sitting on the dust cover to get a better view looking out of the window. I would often find the deck was not sitting square on its shelf where they had jumped up and down onto it. My solution is a cat-proof dust cover.

When I clean used vinyl first step is brush with a carbon fibre brush.
I can tell straight away if the previous owner had a cat.
Cats and clean vinyl just don't mix.
a pair of tweezers that doesn't have rounded edges near the tip. Hopefully, your tonearm has a removable headshell, and your hand doesn't shake like that of Gene Wilder(link below). The stereo scope can also be used for many other audio applications, especially good examination of the stylus for gross wear and cleanliness. You probably already do so, but brush the cats daily, and they love it anyway. Even after brushing, the cats still seem to have more loose hair. That maybe on purpose, so that you continue brushing.
We also have a Whirlpool air filter near the turntable.
Also, if you don't have it yet, I found that the pet hair tool below beats all other pet hair devices. We have already tried the adhesive hair tapes and the pet hair gloves to pick up cat hair all over the house.

1. Follow olddude's cleaning recommendation.
2. Shoot the cat.
What can I say? I'm a dog person.

me too!
Opus, totally agree, I'm a dog person too! :-)
I use a child's toothbrush when something gets on the stylus that the Onzow cannot remove. In the immortal words of Elmer Fudd, "Be vewie, vewie caefuhl."
enjoy!

I know the cat's out of the bag, but I always use a Hunt Brush (or similar) to sweep away any dust, etc. before I play it.
I use OzNow Zero Dust. I don't have a cat, but it works for me.
They sell them on Ebay....

Several of our cats had long delicate hair, find enough to get under my contact lenses.
I've never had a problem of cat hair wrapping itself around a stylus. A few fine hairs will get picked up every once in a while but they're easily removed with a soft brush. Blu-Tak won't work because the stylus tip doesn't go deep enough into the putty.
The only think I can think of is, if you can remove the headshell with the cartridge mounted clean it at a desk or table with tweezers, under a strong light with magnification.
Brush your LPs before you play them, too.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Thank you for the suggestion. For some reason, the stylus cleaning brush leaves the hairs on the stylus. It's almost like the hair strand had wrapped itself around the stylus and won't let go.
I am meticulously cleaning all my LPs in my RCM, and am carefully brushing each side twice before I play them. I'm using Audioquest anti-static brush. I'm also dipping my stylus into Magic Eraser before and after I play each LP side. So the stylus is clean, it's only the hairs are stuck there (they're visible with naked eye).
Question: how much do you think the hairs could affect the playback sound quality?
I don't think the hairs will affect play as long as they're not at the tip of the diamond.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
I see only a few paths:
*live with it*
remove cats from house
remove hair from cats
*install an electrostatic device near the T/T that will exert a greater static attraction than the table*
only partly tongue in cheek here
regards,
