VPI sent me several free felt strip replacements for my vacuum tubes. For those that have replaced them, what brand of contact cement did you use?
Once i remove the old strips, will soaking the tube in hot water dissolve the old cement? Or can i use mineral spirits or WD-40?
Thanks.

I'll look for some double-sided tape. I think that's a better option than contact cement
Hi, bob24,
Get some double-sided tape and cut to fit.
Tom
Thanks, Tom. I'll go to Home Depot and get it.
You don't need contact cement, as I remember. There is an adhesive on the felt strips. Plenty of info on the web.
These felt strips don't have adhesive backing. They have to be applied with contact cement.
Having to apply one's own adhesive would invite mess at best and Lp damage at worst.
Maybe a batch of them didn't get manufactured correctly.
No offense taken,
That's the first thing I checked when I received them. I kept trying to pick away at one of the edges to remove the paper backing, then realized there's no adhesive on it.
These felt strips don't have the adhesive backing, they are put on with contact cement.
They must have changed then. Mine always had adhesive backing.
No adhesive. I did contact VPI and they told me to use any type contact cement. I like the idea of double sided tape better. Seems like contact cement would get a little messy.
Can't even offer new strips with adhesive backing. My Nitty Gritty came with the peel off adhesive strips. Another reason I will not do business them after the mess they did on a order I put in.
Well, at least they'll ship adhesive-less strips for free (just requested some for my machine).
But I wonder if these VPI/Okki Nokki adhesive strips sold on Amazon would work? Appear to be the same size. Blue color doesn't matter to me.
Ad says the strips are:
Super High Quality Velvet
Bonding 3M Adhesive
Fits and perfectly replaces ALL VPI and Okki Nokki Machines
Strip Measures 4" (length) by 1/4" (width)
Oh maybe they will. I'll check out the link. Thanks.
But before I do that, I have a new issue with my VPI 16.5 i need to troubleshoot.
As the vacuum tube goes down to pick up the liquid, the record stops spinning.
I checked the vacuum tube clearance and it's fine. The platter is turning normally.
Someone mentioned to check the platter screws which I'll do today but I can't think of any other reason why all of a sudden the records stop spinning.
I'm wondering if it's a static issue due to the higher heat and low humidity we have experienced lately due to being in the desert.
do you mean the record stops but the platter keeps going?
Yes, the record and the platter stop rotating once the vacuum tube touches the record.
But the record will rotate if the vacuum tube is up.
Nothing has changed. The vacuum tube height is fine and the spindle adapter is tightened as I usually do.
The day before there wasn't any problems. That's why I thought maybe it's the heat and low humidity causing a static charge?
that would include mechanical and electrical problems. Mechanical would be bearing lubrication, and I will let those members with electronic experience explain that side of the story.
On the other hand, take a look at the link below for a much easier solution to your problem. Good luck.
Thanks for your reply. Actually that's what I'm going to do today is check the platter screws. If I remember correctly, there are three.
Actually, my machine is 25 years old and didn't use it very much when I bought it. I had it in storage and started using it again late last year.
I'm hoping that one of the platter screws is loose which may be causing the issue, because that will be an easy fix.

I worked on it yesterday but didn't have a chance to test it. I will do so tomorrow.
Well I fixed the platter issue, but now the vacuum tube does not lift immediately after I turn off the switch and then only comes up just above the record.
I'm wondering if the spring is worn not allowing it to lift properly.
I'll see if I can locate the correct spring. I don't think I can buy it separately from VPI.
It may come as a unit with the vacuum tube holder, which I don't need.
If that doesn't correct the issue I'll just have to consider buying a new record cleaning machine
search reveals possible solutions for you. I searched with google using exactly your problem, and answers do come up.
Other things I thought of were a vacuum lock due to debris in the end of the vacuum tube, or a debris buildup between the inner and outer tubes of the suction tube assembly.
Thanks for the link, I will check it out now.
I clean the vacuum tubes thoroughly after each use with a couple of rinse of distilled water and the drainage tube is clear, nothing clogging it up
Well they didn't charge me for the strips but I didn't realize they would not have the adhesive backing. Perhaps they want to make it difficult for someone to change the strips and just buy new vacuum tubes.
Anyway I'll be off to Home Depot in a few minutes to check on double-sided tape.
