I have a VPI 16.5 record cleaner that hasn't been used for about 25 years.
Now that i'm getting back into spinning records again, i'm curious if there are better cleaners on the market since i bought that one. I think the one i have will probably need new parts and willing to buy if it is still a good machine.
Maybe there are some DIY mods for the 16.5 to improve its performance?
I do remember it being really loud, so perhaps some damping material?
Advice is appreciateed!

Good idea! I need to protect whatever hearing I have left.
Years of rock concerts in the 60s and 70s didn't help!
bob, a few points and reassurances from a long time owner.
* It is still a current product, although changes have been made.
* Parts are available.
* Not much wears out, other than the velvet for the suction tube and (if I remember correctly) the foam platter pad (early models, later have cork).
* If noise is an issue I'd recommend wearing ear plugs rather than the expense and effort of damping material.
* The one modification I did was to install a small whisper fan wired into the motor switch. Otherwise I could feel the spindle became hot if cleaning more than 3-4 records in one session.
* Since you are "into spinning records again" I would say the 16.5 may be fine. Then if you continue with vinyl you could investigate ultrasonic cleaning later. I don't have experience with that but have seen many positive reports.
Have fun and enjoy your music!

Did you install an on/off switch on the outside of the machine?
bob, I think those fans may have a different voltage rating.
I got an audio Whisper Fan (3") and wired it in to the platter on/off switch. So it vents air all the time the motor is running. Also simpler that way.

Intend to wire it to the on/off switch. I feel the machine gets too not after about 9 records using a wash and rinse cycle for each record.
Thanks. I'm sure Amazon has these.
Thanks for the advice!
BTW, I have many copies of Kind of Blue. One of my favorite albums.
Bought my first album around 1968.
Coming up on the 60th anniversary. WOW.
