Do I need boutique low noise resistors or will just plain Vishay/Dales do? In my mind i can make an argument for both.

My favorite resistors are Takman REX carbon films. Carbon films have a nice organic type sound, however all I have tried have always veiled the sound, while the metal films sound detailed but a little harsh (etched is a good term). Tantalum resistors were my faves until I found the Takmans. The Takmans have the organic/musical (some may call it warm) type sound, but absolutely do not veil they sound, smooth yet detailed.
I had made a really nice breadboarded parafeed linestage, using high quality Magnequest B7 nickle core output transformers. I used unbypassed cathode resistors, so they were directly in the signal path. I wired up a DPDT switch, so I could quickly compare one pair (stereo) of resistors of equal value, with another. I also had another audio bud over for a listening session. The difference was startling, we were not prepared for what we heard, not subtle at all. We even prefered them over the high dollar Vishay bulk foil resistors (our 2nd choice). Amazing, especially considering the $.75 cost of a 1/2 watt resistor, the 1 watt versions are only $1.40 each. At the time the bulk foil 1/3 watt Vishays were $8.00 each.
This same breadboard was used to demonstrate the difference between some metal film resistors compared to the Takmans to an EE friend of mine. He maintained that just the construction of resistors of equal value could not sound different, and we were imagining this perceived difference. When I did the demo, he got mad, and said that I was pulling a trick on him, and he stormed out of the shop, all PO'd.
I have used them happily ever since for resistors in the signal path. IMO, one of the best bargains in audio, no compromise at any price. At the time the Vishay naked Z and S foil resistors had not come out yet so haven't compared them, but at $10 to $16 each, don't know if I could afford them anyway.

Depends on what kind of sound you like? Caddock, Vishay, AN Tants all sound more modern and transparent while Carbon comps have more of an old school sound. Get some Halcos or similar in different values to lock in value and then get a handful of different ones of similar value to decide what you like. I liked AN Tantalums best in my system.
