Excellent choice for VCOTD- I just finished the piece on Prog Rock in the New Yorker - and read with relish that Fripp "disbanded King Crimson in 1974 "when all Prog Rock Bands should have stopped".....
I do love that album- and there are some great tunes on it-
Thank you for posting-
Happy Listening
Follow Ups:
King Crimson "Larks Tongues" is a great LP., but prog rock is an acquired taste. It simply drives the Bearette crazy to listen to most any prog rock- she likes *songs,* not deep, long, often-rambling *compositions.*
Nevertheless, King Crimson is from my Golden Age, a band that I still play all the darn time. Their music is propelled by some of the greatest musicians of the age on the roster- John Wetton is a deep bass-god. He died just this year.
Look at the scholarly list of progressive rock Bands from Wikipedia (...a-hem...) It's confused, there were a lot of drugs then... I can't remember. But the bands on the list seem oddly-chosen somehow. The weird juxtapositions such as lumping Styx with Marillion and ELP seem on the face of it looney!
The list though describes an overlayment of the graphs of my taste and prog rock's relevance. So from my collection, in terms of acquisitions of at least one album by a band on the list:
70% - 1960's
80% - 1970's
30% - 1980's
15% - 2000's
2010's- Huh?
