From an interview about the mixing of the new stereo version.
Originally the sounds and instruments were recorded on 4 track tape.
Then they took that tape and played it while recording other sounds.
Each layer of tape got degraded as used in in multiple layers.
For new stereo mix- went back to original versions of singular sounds
And instruments and relayered without all the tape overlapping
Which creates duller, more hissing, sound.

He stated that the information came from an interview, not from him.
justdavid might want to try using quotation marks in the future. There wasn't even a line space inserted between his words and someone else's.
Thanks for pointing that out.
