G'day all, perhaps this thread might be better placed in the DIY forum however that forum seems to be mostly valve/tube based and since this is phono well....

Does anybody still have a liking and use for the NE5532 in phono preamps? For a long time I was a fan of the (sound) of the OPA2134, however I have again warmed to the sound and performance of the NE5532 in recent times.

Although it has been around for 'years' it is still very good for phono applications and I actually prefer it to the LM4562. At least in my beloved DIY ESP P06 phono stage, it is a lot quieter than the OPA2134 as well. Any comments or thoughts? Regards, Felix.

Small story: I have bespoke phonos using Both of those Op Amps.
Work OK.. I was moderately happy.
Then I Built this gizmo

Completely outsounded my previous(above) Op amp based Phonos.
Seriously! Never going back good.
Try it? Both cheapish and easy.

Failing that.. the Boozehound labs 'Kit' is a passable substitute and saves hunting up parts.

The JRC version is superior, but you have to know how to properly implement them to achieve their best performance.

Hi Fscerri,
That is the op-amp which Dave Hafler used in my DH 100 preamp. For no better reason than Dave used them, I used them in my legacy mono phono stage.

Yes. There is a reason why the 5534 and 5532 is still so heavily used in current pro equipment like the Tascam DA-3000 plus countless Musical Fidelity DACs and phono stages which were very highly regarded in their time.... it is neutral and is hard to beat at the price as well as being low noise.
The OPA2134 was a pretty terrible sounding performer IMO! The Linear LME49722 and related are much better and the LME49990 was quite an outstanding device if you were prepared to work around a single op amp. They are all discontinued now...but I was designing my phono stage around the 49990.
If you want low noise then the AD797 would be one to consider. However read the application notes regarding the capacitors in the feedback loop and oscillation.
For phono stages the NE5534 is a better choice.

  I recall trying to find some of these to shoehorn into a Hagerman Bugle I have. Hard to find.
  
  Reminds me why I generally stick to the longevity of tubes (ironically, as many are NOS and not in production but there are large stores of them).
