Garrard 301
Type 01A Preamp
Wright Sound WPP100c
Dynaco ST -70
Yes, SET is better but I am surprised about the ST 70's sound with the 01A preamp.
01A under construction with Rod Coleman Filament supply and Ale Moglia's Gyrator board shown.
PSU with AZ1. I know Andy Evans will frown on this as its solid plate. Don't worry Andy, I have Telefunken Mesh Plates AZ1's ;)

Are those Altec step-ups in the background?
Prior to Alaskahiatt's post, I was going to ask about the ST-70's input board too. I've heard of, but never actually seen a Curcio board before.
Thanks for your post. It reminds me that I need to plug in my soldering iron and get busy.

Altec 4722.
"What, no more CineMag?", but then I looked in your equipment profile...
Which causes me to ask, "What's a CineMag 3004?" Or did you mean to type "3440"?
I always associate your moniker with CineMag, since you helped me with the loading resistor calculations when I built mine some years back.
Thanks again for the help, and for posting your pictures.

I have the ST70 since 2005. I had Joe Curcio Cap and Input Driver board mods. Replace old wirings with solid core and stick with Mullard rectifier and El 34's. That's it.
Pictured, you can see that I can replaced the Orange drops with other caps but I am happy with the sound. East German Siemens 6DJ*'s installed for splitter and driver tubes.
Hello-
I have the Curcio premium mod in my ST70, along with the power supply update, and I'm using Mullard EL34's. I think it sounds fantastic!

You had my interest with your several wee boxes.
Then I saw your ST70 and then you lost me completely.
Bought one of those New in '70?
Modded the hell out of it.. repeatedly (expensively too!) Over the decades.
Finally a simple stoopid NAD 3020 made the Modded ST70 sound like a Kids Transistor radio. I wasn't pleased.
Despite ALL the hype and Love lavished on the venerable ST70
It simply is NOT a very good design /amp.. period.
Took me 30 years to finally realise it, so you are not alone.
I can believe you. As I said, no match compared to SET (I have 45, 2A3, and 300B amps). With the combo I posted, I am just amazed how good the ST70 amp I have sound with the 01A preamp.
I agree the ST-70 is not the best, about the only thing that is really pretty good is the output transformers. I rebuilt my brother's ST-70 using the K&K mod (transformer phase splitter, 6n23p-ev differential driver stage, and differential power stage using NOS 6s3p-e tubes), shunt regulated power supply, and beefed up power transformer, run in triode mode, no negative feedback. Not much ST-70 about it anymore other than the chassis and output transformers. Sounded PDG.

Joe Curcio was as far as I.. OR my wallet would extend.
Throwing $$ at it only lightened my wallet.. when all was said and done.
Unfortunate, but true for me.
Can you "current owners' not accept that the Venerable ST70 was simply a mediocre amp design / execution ??
Dynaco was ALL about value (ie cheap as possible to build products)
Lots of dpcumentations on that.I suppose if one replaced absolutely everything except the tin work ..
It might be genuinely bettered.
Would not be an ST70 though.
