Back in the early 90s, I went to a thrift store in Manhattan that understood this problem. They would take about 1000 records, and put them out for $8 a record. Next week, $5. The week after, $2. Then bargain week, 4 for $1.
They would then throw out the remaining records, bring out another 1000, and start again at $8.
No work required. They supplied the records, and the customers supplied the knowledge.

That has always seemed like a wasteful practice to me. If they just priced them lower to begin with they would most likely sell more and not have to throw them out. They would probably make more money too.
