I'm quite happy with my budget TT but I'm looking to step it up a notch. It could use a bit more bass and transparency. I'd prefer to spend no more than $200 to $300 at this time. Which would do me more good, a cartridge upgrade or phono stage upgrade?
Current system:
NAD C326BEE, NAD C545BEE, Rega RP1 (stock OM5e), Musical Fidelity V-LPS MKII, PSB Image B6
My cartridge short list includes:
- Rega Bias 2 (comes with the Rega RP1 upgrade package)
- Rega Elys 2
- Goldring GL2100
- Nagaoka MP-110 (I hear good things about this)
Thoughts?

So you decided to stick with vinyl. In that case I'd save up more sell RP1 and buy more serious turntable actually worthy a better cartridge. With $300 on hand and I guess 200-300 from RP1 sale you could buy linn lp12 (with a little luck) or Systemdeck XII or something else with substantially better built quality and sound than entry Rega. My 0.2 cents. I would NOT consider any "upgrade" package. Play what you have until you can afford a change .
^^ mostly, except that you can use a better cart with a better table when the time comes.
With my P3-24 and gear, the Ortofon 2M Blue, and for more money, 2M Bronze work very well.

with all due respect to some of the posters, my feeling about the denon 103 is that it is an excellent cartridge, but not a good choice for that light weight tone arm. you need at least a medium weight tone arm for that cart to sound right, also you will have to add weight to both the headshell and the counterweight, so you will either have to go with lead tape that looks like hell or an expensive counterweight that will blow your budget.
if i might suggest the best grado you can afford on your budget.
good luck.

If you want to stick with this source, consider a something like an incognito rewire kit, and possibly a Pete Riggle counterweight.
My thinking is that you would be able to listen to what you've done knowing the sound of the cart. you have, and be well set to spend a bit more on a cart. in the future and better appreciate that upgrade.
Please let us know what you decide and how it works out.
Have fun !

...Denon DL-160, I think that would be a very good choice.

Having owned an RP1, the upgrade package(bias 2) does up the quality for the money. As suggested, the Denon would probably be nicer sounding.
I wouldn't upgrade it further than the cart.
Second the Nagaoka MP-110. You also might like a Denon DL-110.
Hell buy em both, they still come in under budget. Enjoy.

You might consider adding the Ortofon 2M Blue to the list. I'd pick it over any of the ones you list, except possibly the Nagaoka. If you had $500 or so, I'd say shop around for a better (used) phono preamp.
Opus 104
Based on your limited budget, I am inclined to say buy a new cartridge. Personally, I like low output moving coils and there is a classic that will fit your budget. Since your phono stage is MC capable, I would try a Denon DL-103 .
Good luck,

You may remember I have a RP3/RB303 with a Denon 103 waiting to be re-tipped. Once done, in order to optimize the arm/cartridge combination I'll probably need to add weight to the headshell and upgrade the counterweight. No doubt addylo will have to do the same with his Rega arm. I'm really looking forward to trying it out once the re-tip is completed.
Second this. But make sure you have washers to fix the VTA, if necessary.
Cartridge.
