Should their be any play at the pivot point? I can rock the arm side to side. Is this normal? If not, how do I adjust it?

Follow Ups:
If I remember the PY arm correctly, there is an outer nut and nn inner nut on each side.
Somehow the alignment of those two adjusters got wonked.T
I believe you turn the larger nut counter clockwise so that the inner nut (actually with a screw slot if I'm correct)can be tightened. You turn the outer (counterclockwise) nut in tiny increments and then the screw/nut (clockwise). You MUST do this equally...i.e., not tighter on one side than the other.
I'm talking tiny, tiny "numbers of turns. The "distance" is probably less than a New York call girl's twirleys.
I believe the info for all of the PT arms can be downloaded (just did a Google search) but my comuter's an antique and I don't have PDF file download capability.
Google and look and see if the PT0 download shows an arm similar to yours (I think the PT 6/7/8/9 are the same).
I haven't had a PT arm in 15 years so my description/directions could be flawed...but I lean toward the side of being right about this.
Hopefully someone with a more recent "acquaintence" with the arm will chime in.

You obviously buy the wrong kind of computers. The computers that I buy all break down and need to be replaced every three or four years. Consequently, I always have an up-to-date modern computer. I used to buy expensive ones but now I just buy cheap ones and they still break every three or four years. Computers are pretty inexpensive now at Best Buy.
Good luck,
John Elison
...and I think the reason those adjustments are not discussed in the manual is because they aren't meant to be user-adjusted.
I've never seen them come loose before and I've had a bunch of PT arms.
I wonder what happened ?
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I agree with Reelsmith....Personally, I'd send it to the manufacturer for repair...that's the only way you know it was done correctly.
I have a PDF of the manual but it doesn't help. I'll see what else I can find.I owned one twenty years ago and didn't recall there being any play.

(do work) on the arm, but here's a suggestion:
Have Jim Howard rewire the arm and tighten the bearings (or check it out, or...
Tubesforever Jim Howard) of appliedfidelity.com may be able to help you...I don't know whether he can or not. (No affiliation other than being a great friend). He is of genius material.
I have no idea of the cost, either, but I'd e-mail him...he may simply allow you to pick his brains...they most likely have recovered from smoked ribs overdose.
Regardless of what you do, keep us informed, I'm curious (not yellow).
Remember, if you send it, tape & pack to the max!
All of the above may be effected by huge amounts of medicinal chemistry.

I checked the inner screws. The left (looking from the front) was tight. The right one was quite loose. I tightened it and the play is gone. Once I complete setup I will know if I did it right.

frankly I'd get it into the hands of someone qualified to check/adjust it before use.
Short’s the best position they is. Bullet in the Brain
Which, of course, must be exactly the same.
Wendall, good luck!

Well, I don't and wouldn't know how to use it if I did. If I use throwaway records and a cheap cartridge what is the risk? If I don't hear any problems is there a reason to worry?

It was a serious question. I've been collecting records for 45 years but, I guess, I'm at the age that obsessing over it doesn't make sense. I do want it to work as designed.
-Wendell
Exactly, just have fun.
Simpy worry/make sure, the bearings don't bind up...that the arm moves smoothly from side to side and up and down, all the way across the record.
Don't worry, be happy.
