Hi all.
I have a question about carbon fibre brushes for dusting vinyl. I’m considering buying a Hama carbon vinyl brush from my local store for £9. I was if anyone heard if this is good or have experience of one? If not, can anyone please recommend a reasonable price one? Should I spend more and buy an Audioquest brush? Is there any real difference in performance between brushes? I would appreciate some advice!
Thanks
Andy

the Mapleshade fiber brush is desired. I used a VOM to test the continuity from the fibers through the brush body on brushes from Audioquest, from Mapleshade, from Hunt, a generic from Hong Kong, and an Audioquest look alike called "Carbon Fiber Cleaner."
The Mapleshade show almost complete continuity; the Hunt E.D.A. resistance was moderately high; the Audioquest brush resistance was very high but still detectable; and the generic brush from Hong Kong and the Audioquest look alike brush showed total resistance or no continuity.
Thank you everyone for your helpful responses. I guess i'll go with the general consensus and buy an Audioquest brush, and forget the cheaper Hama brush, even though it looks exactly the same. Or maybe the Mobile Fidelity.

I prefer the Mobile Fidelity, applied moderately then rolled off the record leading edge first.
Shine a flashlight on your record in a darkened room before and after brushing. It's TERRIFYING what gets left behind!!

I've seen you can buy replacement pads for the Mobile Fidelity brush. Roughly any idea how often you need to replace pads?

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
You must have a brush. You cannot just clean your records with a record cleaner and never use a brush to get off the unavoidable dust that will collect over time (even on washed records).
The AQ brush is by far my favorite.
The identical brush is $10 at the link below. Both seem to work equally well for me, and the bristles seem to be the same stiffness & density. Of course I did buy it several years ago, and they may have changed by now, your mileage may vary, yadda-yadda...
Cheers,
Bobbo :-)
I've tried half a dozen brands of these generic carbon fibre brushes over the years and although they all look pretty identical, the quality is not a patch on the Audioquest. Some of the generic ones have such stiff fibres that it feels as if you are scratching the record and they pick up no dust. Others are so soft as to be utterly useless and you run the danger of the plastic edge of the brush catching the record. The Audioquest one has the ideal stiffness of carbon fibres and lasts for years.
Had it for years. I use it for day to day light dusting before each play. For real cleaning, it will take more drastic measures.

These were a recommended to me awhile back by Steven Lefkowicz at Positive Feedback. Not exactly a budget option, but they look like they'd be very effective. Never used one myself so I can't comment on how much better they'd be than a AQ or similar brush.

I don't like carbon fiber brushes. Just get a record cleaning machine and you will be set.
the carbon fiber brush is NOT for cleaning, it is for taking the dust off an ALREADY clean record just before playing it.
the AQ brush is the best of the lot. the original decca brush would have been the best and my radio shack one is actually similar to the decca in that it has a LOT of fine fibers and is flexible more than some of the cheaper ones with fewer bristles.
the DAK brush is useless as far as i see but better than nothing.

What record cleaning machine would you recommend for £9, or even $24.75 USD?
It looks good to me from the picture. Check out the link below for a better price.
from the photo i saw on the hama site that one might be different. considering prices both seem a little like generic copies...liking the quality of my audioquest i'd just buy another if something happened to mine.
all these years of service. nt
You could be the official VA tester, and report back with its quality/efficacy, etc.
good luck, P
