I borrowed a NM copy of this Peggy Lee LP from my friend Ronnie. I'm transferring it to WAV, and we'll use some of the tunes on a special Jazz show that Ronnie will cohost with me.
WOW! What a great record. Absolutely love it! Peggy Lee is one of the best female vocalists and this LP is 'All Killer No Filler.'
What's spinning at your house?
Follow Ups:
Good (Taster's) choice, one of my favorite Peggy Lee albums. Nice photo on the cover too.
I recently received the newly issued Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" on Sundazed Records. Must say I'm impressed. The reverb that's prominent on many of those 60's San Francisco bands comes through very clear with a lot of depth on the vocals. It's a very full overall sound, and the sound effects and percussion is much clearer than my "Best Buy" RCA issue (that may not be saying much though, I'm sure the original label sounds better than the "Best Buy" series). This is a "Quality Record" pressing and the vinyl is real quiet with no noticeable ticks or pops. One of the better Sundazed issues I own.
A couple of others I was spinning today:
(Columbia 6-Eyes, MS 6091)
(Sony Masterworks Re-Issue/CTI 88697768271, Remastered from the Original Analog Tapes)
(London Records/Slash LASHX 4, 12" 45 RPM English Import)
That's one I'd be tempted by, even though I own the original and the Best Buy issue. I can't hear that album without being transported back to 1969 and a certain girlfriend.
In time
Long time since I climbed down this mountain before
Things I've seen here make me want to go running home
Lean close put your lips next to my face
Look further on past the surface
Orange, blue, red green
Are the colors of what I feel
And my mind y'know it starts to reel in time
To know your flesh layin' by my skin
And I wonder whenever I'm in
Warm, soft, nice now
Are the word things of what I know
And my body y'know it's so in time
I see you at the same place that I play
Ah darlin' tell me what can I say
Dance, sing, sleep dream
Is the music of what I feel
Among the many things whenever you're near in time
Come with me my friend
Come on now and take my hand
You can be my friend
Soon be in another country

The Airplane' were at the top of their game. I can remember at least 2 or 3 female friends from those days when listening to Crown'. Well at least I didn't waste all of my youth when I was young.
HEY! That's another great tune... and with violin too.
Oh oh...I'm becoming unstuck in time again! Groovy!!
;^)
Spinning a cassette dub I made of my "Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple" LP (Blue Note DMM reissue). Glad I never got rid of my vinyl and my cassette decks.I've got a reissue of "Black Coffee" and may spin that later on tonight. I also have an original "Big Spender"; a favorite of mine from her.

Hi Cactus,
I know you are as much a Peggy Lee fan as I.
If you like Leiber and Stoller and if you liked Peggy Lee's recording of - Is That All There Is - you NEED this CD.
It was a limited edition and I got mine when it was available at a decent price. I think it still can be had on Amazon.

Rosemary Clooney on the "Thanks for Nothing" LP. The intro uses cello and bassoon, the pace is perfect, and her interpretation is matchless. From an Amazon reviewer: "Rosemary Clooney's only complete solo album recorded during her brief 1960's tenure with Frank Sinatra's Reprise label was also her last solo album prior to her complete emotional breakdown in 1968. Though this was recorded some 4 years prior to that, the tell-tale signs of what lay ahead can be heard on this album. And, that's one of the reasons that it remains fascinating."
k.d. lang also did a good one. Great song!
You can hear a sample of Rosemary's "Black Coffee" at the Amazon link.

not sure I understand it. Clooney also recorded the album "Love" for Reprise, so it was not her only one for the label. Perhaps the reviewer does not consider that one a "complete" album (not sure why, if that is the case). Also, I do not agree that one can hear "tell-tale" signs of her emotional breakdown that was to come four years after this album was recorded. It's a downbeat album by design, but Clooney sounds very much in control of the material.
I tend to agreee with you. I posted the review mostly to put into context that fact that it was with Sinatra's label, and the time period.
"Rosemary Clooney's only complete solo album recorded during her brief 1960's tenure with Frank Sinatra's Reprise label was also her last solo album prior to her complete emotional breakdown in 1968"
I also do not hear any signs of impending breakdown, but an artist in control of her work.

on "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", I think.
Thanks for posting this. I was not aware of this album. I will definatly seek it out. Was she the model for the cover? I would not have recognized her in that picture.
I liked her in the '50s but thought of her as a pop singer. At my brother in law's wedding the DJ played her doing some Lady Day stuff. I then realized she had a good bit of Jazz cred and I started taking notice of her. While she may not be in the league with Lady Day, Ella, Sarah, and Carmen she is certainly up there with Peggy Lee in my view.

beginning in the early 70's after her recovery. Great stuff.FWIW-A lot of the pop stuff she did in the 50's was under duress. She did make a great one with Bing called "Fancy Meeting You Here".
And yes, that is indeed her on that cover

Hi Kavakidd,
I agree, her stuff on Concord is great. Concord is a great label. A singer of a later generation, Karrin Allyson is on Concord. Check out her From Paris To Rio album. If Edith Piaff were still with us, Karryn Allyson's recording of Under Paris Skies from that album would probably scare her.
Phil
I have seen her at least four times. She is great. Too many contemporary "jazz" singers limit themselves to material that has been performed to death. Karrin is not afraid to put her spin on different material.
Check out her version of "Naima". Coltrane would like it.

Have to agree on Karrin. I use her 2002 "In Blue" CD as audition material for new components. I have seen this once on vinyl, but missed buying it.

I think that's her on the cover. She had a good jazz career in her later years on the Concord label - any of those LPs are worth grabbing.
I think she tends towards the easy listening/adult pop side of jazz vocal, similar to Sinatra and Sammy Davis.
There are also some clips of her singing jazz on YouTube.

Alan Parsons Project: I had this record in my youth, let go of it and replaced it when CD's became popular, and only recently found another copy with the embossed eye on the cover. I still have the CD but the record blows it out of the water in every way except the usual surface noise. Now I listen to "Old and Wise" with a more mature perspective....
Very nice pressing, and only $19.95 at our drug store chain. They've started carrying vinyl in their audio dept, and a nice $350 Dual TT.
Also listening to

Ella Fitzgerald - The Cole Porter Songbook (mono)
The Beatles - Abbey Road MOFI

i am listening to the hi-rez download that came with my vinyl copy of 'analog man' by joe walsh. the LP was too compressed but the DL seems better. my friend fritz heiler says the CD is sonic crap but the music is good.
it is surely WAKE UP music.
