Just got a brand new Denon DL-S1, after reading many positive reviews. Removed the dust cover - cantilever is off from straight by what looks like 4 - 5 degrees... This does not look normal to me, so I feel like returning it for exchange. Am I crazy?
Follow Ups:
So got my replacement two days ago. It sounds really good right out of the box. Comet Supply came thru with flying colors. They have even sent me an email concerning the strange serial numbers:
"Hi Mark,
Denon got back to us on the serial numbers. They tell us that after the serial number reached 9999, they restarted them. Apparently, they've only allocated 4 digits for the serial numbers & they have to start over.
Robert
Comet Supply"
It is not normal...return it
So got in touch with Comet just now - no questions after looking at my picture. they are sending the replacement and the Return Authorization number. Hopefully the replacement will be straight :-)
Why don't you mount it, align to the cantilever, and if you don't like it you can just demand your money back ... think of it as an audition
Short’s the best position they is. Bullet in the Brain
I'd rather return it un-used...
Thank you everybody! I will post more on Monday after I talk to them
Tell them you want an exchange or all the guys that buy their cartridges will just stop. :)
Nice body on that cartridge, eh!
Short’s the best position they is. Bullet in the Brain
I will for sure!
...or not even start (buying cartridges from them), like in my case. I wonder though, wouldn't they be required to disclose the fact they aren't authorized to sell Denon cartridges and thus also warn the customer Denon won't honor the manufacturer's warranty even if it is (presumably) new?
At 40% discount I think we can't ask them to be perfect 100% of the time. I'm willing to give them a benefit of a doubt, and a chance to straighten this out :-) I'll see what they will tell me on Monday, and post here
Yes, you're right, of course, that is the nature of merchandising, consumerism...and customer service. Hopefully yours will be a good experience of the latter. Good luck :)
...be aware they are a gray goods dealer. They are not an authorized dealer.
They are most likely getting their cartridges from a middle-man in Japan. Your cartridge could be old stock or even used.
Denon will not help you with fixing this, as the cartridge was not brought into the US through Denon in Japan.
I hope Comet Supply comes through for you.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Looks like a great opportunity to report on Denon customer service responsiveness.
Just out of curiosity, what is the serial number?
Yes, you should exchange it for a new one.
Good luck,
John Elison
Serial # 1836, from Comet Supply.
Got one a couple of weeks ago from Comet, serial number 83xx, and the cantilever was fine. Received a second one yesterday from Comet, serial number 1835, and the cantilever was fine.

That serial number doesn't look good to me.
I bought a NOS DL-S1 on eBay three years ago and its serial number was 2334, but it was apparently and old cartridge.
Both the new ones I bought from Comet Supply a year-and-a-half ago had serial numbers of 5476 and 5488.
I think you should send it back for a refund.
Good luck,
John Elison
Hi John. Just spoke with them. No problems - they are shipping a replacement out right away. As to numbers - they told me that they are all fresh stock, and that Denon recycles numbers, after they reach 9xxx or so they start again. Don't know if it's a fact, but that's what I was told. Similar situation was with Koetsus, and I know this from personal experience.
I had a similar situation with an E-Bay seller a few years ago who was very good about returning and shipping a new 103R. The serial numbers did not make sense to me (I bought another 103R two years earlier and the new 103R which I returned had a much lower serial number) and I was quite concerned about the odd serial number but all was fine in the end.
Wow! I'm glad to hear it worked out well for you. I had good results with Comet Supply and I think they are a reputable dealer even though they are not necessarily an authorized Denon dealer. Anyway, I hope your replacement cartridge is a good one.
I'm rather surprised that Denon is selling that many DL-S1 cartridges that they need to start their serial numbers at the beginning. On the other hand, I'm certainly glad to hear they are selling so many. Perhaps there is truly a vinyl resurgence going on.
Best regards,
John Elison
Wow! So is this a very old defective thing? How could Comet do this? Are they selling bad stock to keep the prices down?
They are a grey market seller and Denon will do nothing to help you.
I hope Comet will do right by you and refund or replace an obviously defective product.

I don't know the story. You should call them and find out what's going on.
I believe my two cartridges were brand new and they both seem to work just fine.
Good luck,
John Elison
Hello John
Finally got my replacement today. Serial number - dig this! - 1811 !!!
I called Robert at Comet Supply. He told me that this one is brand new, and fresh, but that they have contacted Denon to clarify this serial number nonsense. He told me he will shoot me an email as soon as they hear anything.
As far as the cartridge goes, it's too early to tell, but 10 hrs into play I like it. It reminds me a lot of the 103, but much more sophisticated, and it tracks great. Same very even presentation, less liquid than, let's say Dynavector 17D, very well controlled. It also seems to be a lot less harsh than both AT OC9ML II and the AT33PTG. It seems to be more forgiving, producing more even music from very varied recordings. Very nice indeed. Velvety smooth. I think I'll keep until I win the lottery and get myself a Koetsu or something like that :-)
Glad you got a good one and I'm glad you like it. I just installed my other DL-S1 on my Technics SL-1200 and it sounds excellent, too. It sounds much more transparent and detailed than the AT33EV. I don't have any desire to go back to the Audio Technica.
A friend of mine is lending me an Ortofon MC-A90 to try out and I'm looking forward to that. I plan to make some comparison recordings as well as conduct some distortion measurements on both cartridges. I'll be reporting on this comparison probably in about a month or so.
Good luck,
John Elison
Hi John
Thank you for your advice - it is really an excellent cartridge... 20hrs, and it sounds great. "Velvety smooth" is the first think that comes to mind. Effortless, 3-dimensional, detailed without being up in your face. really, an affordable high-end. Compare to it my other three sounds rough and brush. AT33 still is a keeper for some material.
Cheers
I would return it, a cartridge that cost that much should have a dead straight cantilever. I can't figure how Denon's quality control missed that.
TR
i would return it.
...regards...tr
Thx
I thought so...

If they aren't responsive. Open up a claim with your credit card issuer. You will get action. At the very least, you will get your money back. Good luck.

That serial # is ancient. Comet honored the Denon warranty; which is only 90 days on cartridges anyway. I had a problem with my DL-S1 after about 6 weeks. Contacted them and was given a RA # immediately and received a new cartridge exchange within a week (serial # 9xxx). Outstanding customer service and they stand behind their products, gray market or not.
I have just received a return label as well, and was promised a replacement. Let's see what happens.
