Hi all,
When there is less volume coming from one of the speakers than the other, is it usually a problem with the phono interconnects or with the inputs on the preamp?
Thank you for your help.

Follow Ups:
It only happens using the phono stage. I tried to play Bill Evans' 'Portrait in Jazz' tonite, but I could only get half volume out of the right speaker. When I used the mono switch, the sound came out of both speakers equally. I really appreciate any help/advice.

Might try swapping tubes from left to right channel and see if weak channel jumps.

I will try swapping a tube from the V2 position. The tubes are only a month old. The tubes were purchased directly from Audio Research after being (supposedly) tested in my preamp. This is soooo frustrating!

Given there are no independent volume control/balance control anomalies. If only on phono, I'd check the phono section tube(s) for the weak channel. If on all inputs, it's likely a driver or output tube issue.

Hi,
This kind of problem can have numerous causes. Your best bet is to do a logical, systematic search for the cause.
I'd first check to be sure all cables are secure--interconnects, speaker cables, etc. Are they all seated correctly and securely?
Then check each item in turn. Turn your system off when changing cables out. Reverse the speaker cables at the speakers. Does the formerly weak-sounding speaker now sound okay and the formerly strong-sounding one now sounds weak? If so, you may assume your speakers are okay and that the problem is further up the chain. Next, maybe reverse the speaker cables at the amp., etc. Within a few minutes, you can run down the component/connection that may be at fault. Sometimes a connection is not secure even though it seems to be. Just swapping out items may result in a better connection and a problem solved.
Good luck,
George
Is it only the phono, or is it other inputs as well? If all inputs, problem is in the speakers (or their interconnects) or the amp/preamp - as George says, work back systematically from the speaker. If only the phono, then it's a cartridge/phonostage/ pre-amp or amp phono input issue. Work backwards from the power amp.
