Hello to my comrades in plastic.
My only copy of Pet Sounds is a 24 karat gold DCC compact disc release, remastered in 1993 by Steve Hoffman. To my ears it sound like crap. I have noticed that original mono Capitol releases are fairly expensive and not easy to find, but that there are several re-releases in vinyl including a Capitol 180 gram 'Classics' version, DCC vinyl versions, a Simply Vinyl version, and possibly others.
Are any of these as good as the original? And what do you think of the sound quality of the original mono release?
I will not pop for the 'duo-phonic' version, and I am concerned that later vinyl releases may have undergone digital remastering.
Your opinions are requested.
Thanks!

I bought it new and am very happy with it. I have not compared it to anything else.

Thanks for starting this thread. I just pulled out my Capitol DT 2458 copy which I think has seen more than 30 years since it was on a turntable.
It's spinning as I write this.
My copy, fortunately looks and sounds pristine. This is the Duophonic version of the T 2458 Mono, also released in 1966. Capitol calls it an enriched monophonic version. It's rather well done with no really bad stereo effects. Quite nicely balanced as a matter of fact.
Anyway, I can highly recommend this one if you can find a copy. Sonics are excellent!
Thanks again for prompting me to give this one a spin again after all these years. I was a sophomore in high school when I bought this record.
is the one that came with the Carl & the Passions two-fer, also released separately by Brother/Reprise with a brown cover. These can be found quite cheaply.
I prefer this version to the Capitol original, the 80s Green label Capitol reissue (note "Wouldn't It Be Nice" on that version is Duophonic, the rest mono), several Capitol CDs (all pretty bad), and the Audio Fidelity Gold CD (very good sounding). I have not heard the DCC CD or LP.
This is not considering any of the stereo remix releases (which I personally do not care for), or the Duophonic release, which is not worth considering at all, IMO.
I posted about this a while ago (link below). I have only the original mono and the "from the Captiol vaults" 180g reissue, and I can tell you that the original sounds great and that particular reissue is simply awful. There are opinions on other reissues within the thread/.

I have the DCC 24K Gold CD, and to me it is crap. The bass is bloated, and the sound level clips every time the tympani are struck. Yes, it has its good moments, but I know what a good record (or CD) sound like and this ain't it.
I'm not sure we're talking about the same reissue but I think mine is the Capitol Vaults one froma few years ago, and my copy sounds AMAZING. I don't think I've heard any other versions, so there may be better. But the copy I have does not leave me wanting in the least. "Awful" is not a word I'd use to describe it, except in the phrase "awfully good."

Since I do not have an original (or any other) stereo edition, all I can verifiably say is that I like the original mono better than the reissue stereo. Maybe I just like the mono mix better than the stereo, who knows. In this arena, I express my opinions, but I generally try not to tell others what to think, given that everyone's ears, systems, rooms, tastes, etc. are different. Sorry if I came across as being too dogmatic.
I have that one too, and I agree it is not awful. But check out a Brother/Reprise pressing when you get the chance, it's better, and it's available cheaply.
if you ever come across the brothers/reprise it would be a good comparison for you hear.
The Capitol N-16156, green label (photo) from the early 1980's may be the cheapest good one. Another one that may be easier to find for a reasonable price is The Brother/Reprise early 70’s either by itself or as the twofer with Carl and the Passions. For me the best but also now the most expensive is the DCC.
discogs (link) is where i got the photo and they have photos of all three labels and covers of the ones i mentioned
The DCC Mono re-issue is the best I've heard outside of the original Mono Capitol T-2458.
