I have a VPI Scout with a ZU/Denon DL103 mc cartridge. I am getting a new preamp that doesn't have provisions for a low output mc cartridge. I want to replace the cartridge with either a high output mc cartridge or a moving iron/magnet cartridge for less than 500.00 retail (new). I like the sound of my present cartridge as it plays all my old records well and rock sounds great with it.
Keeping all this in mind, I am open to suggestions to a cartridge that will work well with the JMW9 arm.
Thanks

After seeing most who replied felt that a sut was the way to go, I bought a used Denon AU-320 SUT off of Audiogon for under 300.00. I should get it by the weekend. I will report on it once I have used it for a few weeks in my system. Thanks for everyones help as I woujld have never gone this route on my own.

I agree with Mr. Ellison.
A better notion is to buy a step-up transformer. If you want to save money try Denon AU-300LC Transformer, it is specially designed to work with 103's cartridges. I own one and it produces a nice overall sound. You will like it!

I am thinking of a Soundsmith Otello or a Dynavector 10 X 5 cartridge. Anyone have experience with either on the VPI table?

Try an Ortofon 2M that fits your price range. I have the 2M Black with a Sutherland Hubble phono amp. It is fantastic, very detailed and precise. The Hubble gives it a lot of warmth.
Dynavector's seem to be very popular for the VPI tables. I've also heard that Soundsmith cartridges mate well with VPI tables.
That said, I'm running a Sumiko Blackbird on my Scoutmaster with very good results.
I agree look into a SUT and stay with the cartridge you like.

Check out Grado,if you take a look at VPI's site you will see that they sell Grado.
They also have a Sound Smith pickup now.
I had a Grado Gold on it at one time, very uninvolving sound and extension wasn't that great. I have a chance to get a Shure V15MR cartridge. Good match?

If you did not care for Grado a Shure will surely put you to sleep.
but maybe not with a JICO styus.
