A friend of mine is going to bring some of his father's LPs from France so that I can transfer them to digital so that he can listen on his PC. I've never done this before, in fact I've never even downloaded a song, so I want to make sure that this will work:
1) Play vinyl through ZYX cartridge and into preamplifier
2) Go from record out on preamplifier to Furutech GT-40 ADC
3) USB cable from Furutech to PC
4) Use Audacity free software to convert into digital files on my hard drive
5) Transfer from my hard drive onto my friend's portable hard drive
I think the last thing I have to decide is what file format to convert the files into. My friend said that he uses iTunes. He is not an audiophile in any way, but does know good sound as he is a highly trained musician (trumpet and voice) that sings professionally part time in a choir in Paris. So, I do want to have the files in a format that still sound pretty good.
So, will steps 1-5 above work, and what file format would you guys recommend for playback in iTunes (or some other free PC software)?

Follow Ups:
Make sure the little slider switch on the Furtech is set for "line" input if you are using the line-level output of another preamp that includes RIAA eq. You may have to fool around with the level settings a bit to avoid overloading the Furtech, as it seems to have no analog input level control.

Be aware that you can really sink some time into recording vinyl. If you're accustomed to ripping CDs to your computer, it may come as a surprise just how much time it can take.

You really need to be a little more explicit in step (4).
That step can produce anything from a scratch-for-scratch verbatim copy of an LP side to a beautifully-restored set of individual track files. It takes time, it takes technique. And it's whole lotta fun.

I would use aif format because it is uncompressed and accepts meta data like album covers in itunes. The procedure describes what I do so it should work.
Thanks for your response! Would my friend easily be able to play back aif files over iTunes without any kind of "conversion" (hopefully right choice of word there)?
AIFF works in iTunes. They'll play fine.
Steps 1-5 will work just fine.
I'd recommend doing transfers and saving them as WAV files at 44.1/16, which is CD redbook standard. You can then save and transfer the files to your friend's computer, burn the files onto CDs for playback, or import them into Itunes converting the files to MP3 or similar formats for use in an Ipod.
The most critical part of the whole process will be clean records, clean stylus, and using a high quality cartridge & turntable.
