I've wondered about that too. I'm thinking that the 550 gave you the somewhat higher quality of the 570 (compared to the 530) but at the expense of the automatic features. Features aside, I'm thinking that it would be hard to tell the 3 'tables apart sonically. All are very solidly engineered.

Looking at the innards of the 530 from the service manual (vinyl engine) indicates it isn't as sophisticated under the hood, certainly not the automated stuff. The 530 auto stuff looks very well build but in the 570 it be removed as a "module", a few screws and the whole shebang just lifts out! From a design POV the 570 innards are just way overboard, you open it up and go ... Wow! (judge for yourself)
The other notable thing is the absence of the hefty metal sub-plinth which I guess mostly explains the 4kg difference.
But from a practical performance perspective you could be right all the same, head-to-head would be the only way to check :)

Interesting. There is about a 4 lb. difference between the 3 models. The 530 is 22, the 550 is 26 and the 570 is a hair under 30 lbs. Mine has the metal sub-plinth, as well.
