woke up at 5 am and walked a mile to the friends of the library book sale. with dirty finger tips and an aching back, i walked out with mostly classical: BB, 1S-5S, westminster hi fi, RVG Vox, tulip, blue angel, etc. @ 2.50 an album
the titles are relatively common but the condition for 'em all were simply immaculate sans the Michael Rabin/wieniawski/bruch with its 4 revolution tick.
...that it was the Ithaca book sale. If so, I'm glad you focused on stereo discs and left most of the mono for me!
Doug E.
P.S. I also picked up the Michael Rabin Wienawski/Bruch at a previous Ithaca sale. Mine is near mint but slightly off-center on one side.
Being classical guys, we certainly have quite a bit of elbow room compared to those rock/pop/country dudes ;-) I was diggin' all alone from 8-1 ish in the classical row.
let me know if you are partial to any particular mono recordings and I'll leave those behind.
btw, do you know if syracuse or binghamton have something like this going on anytime soon?
Hey Gief,
I got down there about 4:30 on Sat. and had the classical section to myself too. Now that I have good examples of most of the standard repertoire, I'm focusing more on British labels (EMI/Angel, Decca/London, etc.) and the Baroque era. I'm also partial to Mercury Living Presence. My personal rule is that everything I pick up must be near mint with intact sleeves (no splits & tears). So I reject a lot of good stuff, but since I already have lots of records I can afford to be choosy. Later in the sale I take another look through the whole section to find record or sleeve upgrades for albums I already have.
A big part of the fun for me is listening to these discs on equipment of the era.
I don't know of any shows in Syracuse or Binghamton but I'll keep my eyes open...
Doug E.
Wow, nice records! Didn't you post a rather large amount of London Bluebacks you found at a thrift store awhile ago? Two of the best classical hauls I've ever seen, congrats!
yes, the previous haul was from a Goodwill.
Picked these up at the Grand Rapids record show this past Sunday in real nice near mint condition. Big fan of the older "Concert-Disc" records, before Everest was bought out and was pressing some great sounding vinyl.
(Concert-Disc CS-214)
(Concert Disc CS-226)
(Columbia 6-Eyes MS 6303)
(London Wide-Band Blueback CS 6209)
i'm not too familiar with the concert disc label, could you tell me a bit about them? the font for "STEREO" reminds me of the mercury stuff
Concert-Disc was an affiliate of Everest and Concertapes. Orchestras/symphonys mostly recorded on the Everest label, while smaller quartets, etc. (mainly members of the Fine Arts Quartet and New York Woodwind Quintet) were recorded on Concert-Disc. The earlier Everest pressings are very highly regarded.I'm quite certain there's no relationship with Mercury.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Spinning Tonight
(but from my Mac Mini music server as I catch up on a project for work)
John Williams work, Fiddler played by Isaac Stern! Original Soundtrack.
Very smooth and good sound, outstanding 99 cent 2 LP set.
My teen is in the pit orchestra for their school musical, Fiddler.
Will probably play some Brahms symphony excerpts (kid is trying out her excerpts for next yr, 2nd symph 2nd mvmt).
I like it, although my wife, abig fan of musicals, actively dislikes it. YMMV
Nice pressing on yellow vinyl, just out from Mexican Summer.
It sounds like, hmmmm ... imagine Billy Idol was 1) a black woman and 2) did a totally rad, totally straight-faced impression of Kate Smith.
Then imagine she made a record with a producer who thought all music should sound like Kraftwerk.
It would be this record. And I'm really enjoying it!
PS. Very sad about Yauch.
If you understand, things are just as they are; if you do not understand, things are just as they are.

THis is the only album I liked out of their catalogue.
They can actually play the *straight* stuff.

Too bad. Funny and talented dude. Way too early. Listening to
Paul's Boutique" on the iPhone right now. (traveling)

Dude, Licensed to Ill was my favorite tape in 4-6th grades. And of course I like plenty of their stuff after that, at least up through Ill Communication, which came out when I was in high school. Sort of lost touch with them after that, but...
I'm guessing the same thing that gave him his awesome gravely voice has something to do with this.
Anyway, some sad shit.
We will all miss what he would have done in the second half of his life.
