Some doe not have $2K for Schiit systems. If it is working, one does not have to rebuilt either, buy new audio grade caps makes for a little superior sound.
Perhaps for you LLoyds or Soundesign?

Vidar Amp $700, Saga preamp $400, Mani phono $130. There is also the Emotiva amp product line, basic amp $299. Thank you for your suggestion for myself, but I have a ARC LS28, HK Cit-II, Merlin Black Magic Speakers - I'm a little beyond LLoyds or Soundesign. To end on a positive note, there are some Class-D amps out there that are inexpensive and get good reviews from what I've read - but I don't track them. Oh, maybe also consider trying to find a Magnavox tube amp out of an old console. They can be inexpensive and sound nice - just limited power. Now that could be a fun project and a worth while project in my view. And yes, I have one for my desktop system. You just have to hunt for one. In closing, I'm obviously not big on spending time with a vintage SS Receiver - unless I get it for FREE.
Charlie, the point of the post is some have interest in vintage receivers, but do not know what to look for. There must be 100 different vintage receivers but only the three models I listed are worth considering for HI-FI sound and especially so after an upgrade to modern capacitors.
No vintage receiver with the phono op-amp will sound as good as newer or new audio equipment and many will use a turn table. So, I though it was important to list non op-amp vintage receivers. Just because you think vintage gear is bad news does not mean others think that way. Okay?

I haven't researched them in a long time, but there were off brands that were made by the major companies but relabeled for Radio Shack, JCPenny's etc.... One example was Optonica. I believe it was made by both Pioneer and Technics(?). Others like MCS, Sony, etc... do some searching right here on this forum. You should find a list of "sleepers".
Right now the "hotter" vintage brands are being snapped up by collectors AND decorators!!!!!!
You could also look into vintage preamps???? They seem to be holding a steady price. Some of those smaller preamps were pretty sweet!
Also, I don't know how old you are or how your hearing is. But once you hit about 50, your hearing not only changes, but tinnitus starts setting in. What I'm finding is newer gear is NOT suited for anyone with even the slightest hint of tinnitus. Stick to the older stuff. the reason is older stuff has more second order harmonics, which translates into a nicer (not rolled off) sound. Newer gear tends to be to edgy for me.

I plan to keep the Marantz Model 18 that cost a full month of post-doc stipend in the late '60s. I'd like to have it serviced and a new oscilloscope installed, although I haven't fired it up in decades. Maybe some day.
I had a MINT 18 with an extra scope tube around 2005. One of my the top five audio blunders was selling it.
Hold onto it and have it PROFESSIONALLY restored. Go over to the Audiokarma Marantz group to look for a MORE than qualified tech.
I'd forgotten that one of the pre-docs was a tech at a radio station and managed to get a discount on my Model 18, but it still cost a month of post-doc stipend. I still have the AR3a speakers I used with it, but not the AR turntable with Shure V15 II cartridge.
Old ears. My ears are 71 years old. I used to tweak tube gear, but around age 65 noticed I could not hear the tiny differences any longer. At 68 tinnitus did set in, but about a 10Khz low level pitch as the slight hiss I always had in a silent room changed to have a slight tone. It goes way at times and does not seem to interfere with listening to music. I still hear 20Hz to 10kHz.
My tube amp that slightly outperforms my rebuilt 'freak' Allied 395 per another audiophile with younger ears, it is not so evident to me. Perhaps time to pass my tube amp to a younger audiophile. Hey.........
