...after upgrading cartridge on my big rig, but then I showed my wife a picture of a Fisher 500 C. Not that I needed a reminder of how lucky I am, but she loved it, agreeing that it would be very cool at the heart of a vintage system in our cabin. Alas, we don't have a cabin, so she immediately suggested having it in the basement system. Well, a week or so later I'm now also looking at a TD 124 and Altec Santiagos - stay tuned for pix!
Follow Ups:
I just happened to have the grille off of one of mine today (for a reason, but not important in the context of this post). I remembered I was talkin' up Santiagos somewhere recently, so I snapped a couple of piccies.Given that this thread is where I was talkin' 'em up, I figured I'd post one of them here . These are 878A versions.
Yeah, you should buy a pair if the price is right. :)
If the price is wrong, spring for a pair of (edit) 846A Valencias, instead!
all the best,

Almost done with my TD-124. Fully restored by Chris Harban at Woodsong, I was lucky and got a really good deal on it with an audio bundled pick. Amazing physical condition as well.
I ended up going the Jelco TK-850L route when you could still get them and looking to mate the Hana ML to it.
I also have a fully restored Fisher 500C, currently out getting an FM alignment, however the two will never meet.
Fisher 500C and a Thorens 124 is a match made in heaven.
yeah, I'm pretty excited. I've got a Garrard 401 that I love, but have always had a soft spot for the td-124.
In fact, I like them a lot.
They fly under the Altec radar because they're a few dB less sensitive and they use those tacky ;) Dynamic Force woofers in sealed boxes. Heresy! ;)
They sound quite good and they're cheaper than, e.g., a pair of Valencias. Much cheaper, with luck (trust me on this).
They have better HF and bass extension than Valencias, too.
They just don't have the cachet . :)
There's one of mine when I was doin' some rearrangin' upstairs -- they're both now out in the front and hooked up (some of the time) after hiding back in the corners, with stuff piled on 'em for about six years.
all the best,
mrh
yes, those are cool. what amp(s) do you drive them with?
they're hooked to this at the moment...shhh! This is our little secret , 'K?
;)
PS If you're wondering why there're a total of two FM tuners in the photo above -- there is absolutely no logical reason . I've been listening to the T-7 lately... but... just because I can. :)
The tuner in that RX-V1050 receiver works fine and sounds perfectly OK, as well.
all the best,
mrh

It always exudes lots of fun!

mhardy: What is that object, to the right of the reel to reel in the middle of the floor? It looks like a plank with a pivot point.
A $7 find at the New England Antique Radio Club (NEARC, now NEVEC - NE Vintage Electronics Club) semiannual fleamarket some years back.
It's a Technics SH-F101 active indoor FM antenna. It's adorbs, and it works... well enough. I actually use it with the MR-67, but I was movin' stuff around -- initially to get a mini-split heat pump installed in the hifi room last summer, mostly for A/C, and also to clean. So, it was just sittin' on the 'coffee table' in front of the futon in the middle (ish) of the room.
If you're asking about anything else in the photo -- I dunno. ;)
all the best,
mrh
