Greetings all. It's been years since I lurked these halls but I am happy to be back.
In any case I recently fell into ( haha) two pairs of new large advents so of course I decided to stack them which I have never done. In the normal Tweeter to Tweeter configuration however they sound a bit bright to me. One caveat is that one pair has had the Tweeter switches bypassed so they are either on or off).
To make a long story short, I flipped them so they are woofer to woofer now and they do seem less strident. Has anyone else done this and or have similar experiences? I assume I am violating a bunch of physics laws by doing this but....

Follow Ups:
When doing this operation, do you wire them IN SERIES or PARALLEL?
If you wire them in series, and out of phase, it might be worthwhile to face one BACKWARDS?
I'd try all sorts of things if I had a couple pair of these once 'aspirational' speakers.
Too much is never enough
we found that vertical woofer to woofer congig gave the best bass as the woofs seemed to couple better. for years i stacked Dynaco A25s horizontally woof to woor, tweet to tweet with tweeters inside with the sturdy cardboard shipping boxes spray painted flat black as stands. that worked well but at the tweeters were wired OOP to avoid a midrange suckout, the imaging was never their strong point.
they did open up nicely when i added a 1" Philips clear plastic dome above 10kHz. the lows were necessarily reduced with a Metrotec 5 band eq. DAMN the bass was tight.

Now that's a 60's affectation if ever there was one .

I never liked double Advents(I only tried vertical tweeter to tweeter). I found single Advents to be cleaner, more defined and more focused. Doubles always seemed to have an amorphous image and were more veiled. I tried double Advents first(compared to IMF Studio 2s which I also preferred as did the other listeners) Then we went back to single Advents which is when I finally decide I preferred them.
I can understand that concern. In my case a great part of why I enjoy the stacked advaents is that my room is a long rectangular workshop where I spend most of my time standing. And, I'm only about 8-10 ft from the speakers. that means I really enjoy the sound being up a few feet off the ground. Room Dynamics are so critical...

B&W 16s?
Yes those other speakers are b & w DM 16s. That has been a interesting project. they were destined for the dump, both tweeters were toast. I pulled both crossovers one had a bad capacitor and resistor the other just needed the Molex plug tightened and connection cleaned. I replaced the tweeters with titanium instead of the original cloth. I love them with tube amps. Punchy and fast 10" woofers.

I decided to hook up an outboard preamp to my Sansui 5500 receiver, which I'm using to power the nla's. The sound is quite smoothed out now, especially vinyl, and I switched them back to Tweeter on Tweeter configuration.

Wow, there was a rabbit hole I ventured into. I have had three pairs of Large Advent speakers. One OLA with utility cabinets since sold off and two pair of second generation (metal woofer) which I still have, with the nice walnut cabinets. Another source for input is the Advent forum here:
It sucks to get old. It really sucks to get old and bitter.
Hi Sanman, if you stack them vertically with tweeter to tweeter and the woofer's apart I think you get a sort of D'Apollito effect if I spelled that right. With only one tweeter going, that might screw things up,you better check, you might get better imaging. I remember tha Large Advent tweeter was no great shakes as far as quality but they sounded great.I think more Advents are still owned in Maine than any other place..New Engand Music, still going,in 1977 sold to many of my friends a Yamaha receiver,Dual turntable and the Large Advents which still look beautiful and sound great.....Mark Korda
decades actually, since I had stacked Advents.
I tried them horizontal as Hornlover described, but preferred them vertical, with tweeters up.
I wonder if your stridency results from a damaged tweeter or crossover problem? Placing the tweeters so high and low puts you out of the direct radiation as you have them when seated.
Also, someone recommended placing a resistor (?) inline between the two speakers to roll off one woofer around 100 Hz or so. That way it functioned more as a mid-woofer and overall bass was reduced. That resulted in better balanced sound overall. Sorry, I don't remember the value or know enough about crossovers to calculate it. But I liked that best.

I always preferred them turned sideways, and stack them woofer above woofer, tweeter above tweeter. On stands, of course.
