The grease in these old decks gets dried up, experiencing the same issue with an old Kenwood unit. The slide for the head assembly is dragging causing the head to have poor contact with the tape, the deck needs servicing.

If he can't service it himself, it is unlikely that he would be able to recoup the money for service in the resale value. Cassette decks just are not worth that much. I wish it were otherwise. I have a stack of Nakamichi decks ...

I'm wondering myself if I ever get my money back that I spent on the restoration and recapping project on my Revox/Studer B215 cassette deck. But nevertheless, it sounded even better now than when it was new.

That is a nice deck. I have a Revox turntable that needs work on the arm.
