Ok
This is a very sophisticated deck. It also has repeat play but when it cuts out, take a handle end of a screwdriver or wooden or plastic stick and start tapping on the relays. You can test the record and playback amps by putting a signal into it from a stereo tuner or any source and see if the signal meter drops out and do this in record with the pause on. Also, take out your tapes and see if there is any chewing on the outer edge as this would indicate mechanical issues,

I believe I resolved the problem with the deck. I did clean everything but the main problem that I found --as you suggested--I started tapping on some components and found it was one of the 4 circuit boards loose. Once I reset them it has been working great.
Thanks to you and all who sent me suggestions.
