Well, I don't pretend to be Mike etc. but I'm pretty happy with my work. This is a MX110x, it was a short lived version between the M and the Z. It has the rotary balance control like the Z but different end caps. The main electronic difference is the Z changed a 6AB4 to a 6U10 to get two more triodes. They were used as cathode followers in the line stage after the input selector before the Tape Outs and Filter/Tone Controls. I think that a low impedance tape deck plugged into tape outs probably was difficult for the phono pre-amp (12ax7) to drive but that's just a guess.
I've rebuilt the power supply with uF diodes, and F&T filter caps that have been upsized. I mainly left the Mc brown coupling caps in place but did change out several electrolytic for 716P orange drops. I'm biased but I think it sounds pretty good. :)
Oh, you may have noticed the wood end caps. The originals were held together by tape and I managed to bend one of also. I know Audio Classics will sell a new pair for a $100 but I routed out some scrap hardwood I had and think they look ok given my naked (no case) unit.

Speaking of experience and not having your abilities, I sent mine to Audioclassics where Richard Modafferri rebuilt it. Great sound especially for ambiance, voices, and soundstage to my ears. Enjoy the music!

I have an old C-20, still did not rebuild it with Mike or Terry.
Is that a Thorens TD 124 with a Mayware unipivot arm on the left? I have an old Empire 98/298 but gave away the Mayware.
How does your MX 110 sound?
That is a TD-124 with a SONUS Formula IV uni-pivot. There were three makers of that tonearm, Mayware, Sonus, and a third I can't recall. The Sonus version armtube has an offset which works nicely with the 124's high platter otherwise it is the same as the Mayware.
I like the MX110 a lot. I also had to change out the volume control so I presently don't have the Loudness feature. I am presently using it with some modified Bogen tube(7868) mono blocks into Thiel CS2's. I don't have as critical an ear as others but the combination sounds great to me with the speakers disappearing and especially good on female vocals.
The third would be JH.
I'm looking at the label on the box for mine, and it says,
JH Formula 4 Laboratory Standard Tone Arm
Designed by:
J.H. Reproducer Co.
Melbourne, Australia
Produced by:
Risui Corporation
Tokyo, Japan
If I recall, there was talk of lawsuits thrown about, trying to sort out who owned what. I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me that actually making the word "Reproducer" part of your company name is implied guilt!
It looks like your Sonus has the same "bucket of BBs" anti-skate system that my JH does. Bucket of BBs isn't my term, but I recall reading it in a negative comment that Mayware made in a letter to the Absolute Sound, while denouncing the JH as inferior to their arm. TAS didn't seem to think so, and wrote that the JH sounded better than the Mayware.
A bit of FYI for the Asylum archives, just in case somebody twenty years from now is looking for this information.
Beautiful job on that MX110x, by the way!
And, I may still have one in its original packaging!

Back when the ideal arm was thought to be a single strand of thin blonde hair, lightly sprayed with just enough hairspray to maintain semi-rigidity for the ultra-compliant cartridges of the day.
I thought of you when I was typing the label information, Timbo. I'd completely forgotten that they were imported to the USA from Melbourne.
Pretend to be Mike? He's nobody. You did a nice job there my friend and that Mike guy should feel honored you mentioned him.You did a fabulous job from what I see and it's nice and neat and truthfully,I think it looks and no doubt sounds better than original. The only think I suggest would be putting in Schottky Cree diodes in the power supply. That does help these units quite a bit.
Which lytics did you change out for orange drops because I don't know of any orange drops as big as lytics in value?

Coupling off the 6u8's into the balance control were two 1uF electrolytics. 1uF is a pretty big orange drop but I was able to fit them. Somewheres else I inserted another pair but for the life of me I can't remember where or why.

Now I remember. There were some .1uF Ceramics that a Mac service bulletin recommended switching.

I'm aware of the 1uf caps and I always use a 1uf Solen film and tin foil there but I would use a 116p if I had some in 1uf.Definitely put some Schottkys in because you can get those for a couple bucks and it makes a noticeable difference.I also use the red audiophiler caps there and even tho they are metallized, they sound quite good. I have used Auricaps there as well and they sound quite good as well.
