I picked up a pair of Jensen Model 1 speakers in excellent shape on an impulse today, and so far I am pretty impressed. They don't have a lot of bass (6 inch woofers I think), but the detail and imaging are surprising. I can't get the grills off, but I haven't tried very hard. Does anyone know if they are glued on, or how to get them off? Do they have foam woofer surrounds? If so, they might need replacing since they are all original. Any other info would be appreciated. Cheers!

How sad is it to answer your own thread? Well, I gently pried the grills off (they are held in place with 4 tacks, for lack of a better description), and the foam is rotten. Worse then I have ever seen actually ... yet they still sound very good ... ???There is only one driver in each box, 8 inches with a wizzer cone. I picked up the foam surrounds locally for 5 bucks a piece, and the glue is drying as I type this. I wasn't unhappy with the sound before, so I am sure that the bass will tighten up with the new surrounds.

I have had to answer my own thread too :-(! I think you found where the base went! In your position, I would have refoamed too. Some of those wizzer coned 8 inchers are very good.

I have a pair of cheesy home-grown speakers that came with 4" Radio Shack drivers with wizzer cones, and they have these crazy coil things in them. I am told that they are some sort of "crossover" that attenuates the midrange of single drivers to give the illusion of more bass. I might try them in the Jensens and see what they do.

It is probably a notch filter. It may or may not be right for the Jensen. I would do a search. There may be one specifically designed for the Jensen.

Thanks Dave. I thought I would just hook it up to the speaker terminals first, and if it makes a nice difference then I will install it permanently inside the box.

I don't think it could hurt anything to try it.

I liked that it tamed the midrange a bit, but they lost a lot of dynamics, and the treble was too much. The bass was actually smoother without them, so I am going to leave them stock (except of course for the new foam surrounds). They didn't turn out too bad though. Now to try some Heil tweeters in my ADC 303ax!

Live and learn! They do look nice.

Probably the reason for the poor bass response. I had a pair of model 6's about 40 years ago (bought new). A 15", 8", 4" and a 1" dome tweeter in a sealed box. They sounded pretty good, actually.
