For the most part, my vintage system consists of hand-me-downs from earlier systems I've owned that were significant in my walk with audio.
This time I've moved the Wayback Machine forward ten years. The Advents returned me to 1972 when I bought my first decent system. Ten years later, I had updated Acoustat Monitor 4s to 2+2s which I kept for twenty some years. I've been looking for a pair of similar 1+1s and picked them up yesterday. The Threshold amp is returned to its original dance partner. Well, close. :)
While I've enjoyed the double New Advents for many years, they are not a match for the coherency, resolution and imaging realism of the Acoustats. The tradeoffs are the Advents go lower and can play louder. I've mentioned before how well the Advents sounded far outside the garage. In this respect, the Acoustats are better still. Voices sound so natural and alive even from my neighbor's driveway!
Now, a bit of work begins. The grill cloth is in horrible shape as the original owner had cats. Which is just as well since they are not acoustically transparent. I had re-socked the 2+2s with Spandex a while back to improve their sound. These need the same update. I suspect the power supplies are original and internal parts could use some updating as well. The panels need a fresh tensioning job via hair dryer, too. One flaps a bit on low bass.
I couldn't be happier.

Get a subwoofer or 2 and there will be no tradeoffs. When I worked in audio, we had 2+2's drive by the big Nakamichi Stasis with a Velodyne UDL 15 subwoofer. The Telarc of Alexander Nevsky was breathtaking! The Battle on Ice blew everyone away who heard it!
I would expect your system to sound even better because the Threshold Stasis 3 sounds better than the Nak and 1+1's are more coherent that 2+2's. Plus we didn't have those cool ladder diffusers between the speakers!

Acoustats for the garage system? Now I've seen everything!
a very good price. Less than I paid for the four Advents years ago. :)
Ummm, what do you plan to do with the New Advents. I'd be interested in one pair.

honestly, the utility cabinets of my set are kinda rough and not particularly valuable. I think I'll hang onto them for parties.

just cleaned it out last week to paint the floor. Begin driving on new surface today.
I'm looking at painting mine this summer. I'm assuming you went with one of the epoxy floor paints or did you use something else?

You are correct. I purchased Quickrete Epoxy paint kits specifically designed for concrete garages. It consists of nearly a gallon of paint, epoxy activator and acid based cleaner for etching.
The greatest amount of work was on the front end. First, you clean the surface of all grit and scrape off any spilled paint or other imperfections. Then you thoroughly spray the floor with a garden hose and section by section, you apply the acid to prep the concrete. Scrub vigorously, then rinse each section. Rinse again thoroughly after application, squeegie the water and let dry for a day. Then you mix the epoxy paint mixture and paint small sections at a time. Sprinkle color chips while still wet.
The recommendation is to wait 72 hours before driving on the surface. I waited a week just for good measure.

I assume you have a lot of guitars to play with all of those amps.

Looks like somebody likes JBL speakers for guitar.
I had the 1+1's years ago and loved them. Thats when I had ten foot ceilings though. Keep us updated on these beautiful things....
I have two pairs of Acoustst 1+1 speakers. I listen to one pair in my main system, and the other (Medallion version) is in storage as I bought them with one speaker not working.
I hope to refurbish both pairs eventually, so I am eager to hear your ideas.
