I have a Sherwood s8000s. Two mark 1s and one Mk IV. I haven't got around to restoring them yet, as there are about 4 or 5 can caps on each, that are going to take a LOT of work.
I was thinking of selling one, but have changed my mind.
One of the mark 1's is in VG cosmetic condition and has 4 7591s and 6 12ax7s. The 7591s are Westinghouse and the 12ax7s Amperex. I would suppose the market value, unrestored is around $300. The driver tubes and outputs are worth a lot of that, so I would actually be better taking the transformers off and selling parts than selling the whole unit and getting more money.
This is not an ad to sell, and I have decided to keep it as I can't bring myself to sell it as parts, when the unit is working. But something has got to be wrong when this happens.
The Dyna SCA35 is another unit that is worth more in parts. Can you think of any others?

The unrestored value of the Sherwood s-8000 in VGC is well about 300 dollars. You couldn't get those 3 years for 300 in good shape. If this unit is in decent condition with face paint in tact,500 dollars is an easy mark.
When problems become increasingly difficult,we can always rely on our collective knowledge and seek relief.
Some keep the tubes & install new inexpensive tubes, then sell the gear. Many have collected $1000s doing this trick a few years ago.
...but an inmate told me to check inside to see if it still had the original Telefunkens ...which it did. That turned trash into $500.

Edit: Or it was a 64X ...I forget.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Autos, bikes and big honking consoles from the 1960's.
Most are. If you think about it, all those "ordinary" tube components of the early and mid 60's came stock with what is now sought after tubes. I've got a bone-stock Dynaco PAS-2 sitting on a shelf. Now there are a lot of upgrades you can do to it, but it's likely that a modern preamp will still better it. And it's not particularly valuable itself, but it's full of the original Dynaco branded Telefunken 12AX7's which are probably more valuable than the whole preamp--provided they test high enough. Others I'd put in the same boat are the Eico ST-40 and ST-70. I think they look ugly, especially compared to the brass-faced Fisher and Scott gear, but again the tubes and transformers are there. The rule-of-thumb I've heard is that if the cosmetics are good, chassis undamaged and no rust or corrosion then it's worth restoring, otherwise you might be better off parting it out.

If cutting out the middleman lowers the price, why are we paying the government to stand between us and the markets?
