A couple of weeks ago I came home with my parents' old Sherwood S-8800 FET (and the AR-4x speakers that were used in the den). I hooked it up to my TT and CD changer and it sounds as good as I remembered. It was well taken care of until recently -- it spent the last two years boxed up in the basement and there is a little corrosion. Even so, most everything seems to function quite well except:
-- the power switch/volume control is scratchy and sometimes I have to turn it off and on to get the left channel working
-- the FM hush and preamp level controls are a bit stiff
-- the tuner is a bit out of alignment but since I don't listen to the radio very often it's not a big deal to me
I've been trying to read up on how to clean it up a bit but am not sure which of the DeoxITs I should be using to clean the power switch/volume control -- faderlube or d5 or?
Thanks for any advice on this,
karlyn
P.S Wish I'd seen the one that sold on ebay for $10.50 before the auction ended since this one has no case (my dad built it into a credenza and if it had a case it's likely long gone).
Follow Ups:
The older US made Sherwoods are awesome IMO. I have a S-8500 that my Mom bought new in 1970.
You will want to recap your S-8800 if you plan to use it long term. My S-8500 has lots of the older plastic molded caps in it and those are trouble prone. The tuner in my S-8500 is out of alignent too. I had issues with the center tune being off. I was able to tweek it back by doing the old, metal jewlers screw driver in the coil trick. Once I found the coil that tied to the meter, I tweeked it back. One of these days, I will get a signal generator and properly realign it. :-) For the most part, the tuner works well, but I seldom listen to FM in the house anyway.

Thanks -- from what I read I thought it'd be the opposite!
The cases were options so many US produced Sherwoods had neither the metal (wood grain vinyl) cover or wood sleeve. I don't use De-Oxit so can not help there. It would be well worth having it gone through as it is early and some caps more than likely out of spec. If the tuner is based on the S3300 tuner of the time, get it aligned as it is an outstanding tuner and a real sleeper. I use the S3300 tuner and a 20 watt S9500c amp and really like them. The amp section of the 8800 may be either a S9500 or S9900 depending on the rms power rating. Sherwood with its tube receivers just put their separates circuits onto a single chassis and my SEL-200 receiver uses a S3300 tuner as well as the SEL-300 tuner so suspect the 8800 is likewise built.
Karlyn,
I'm in Lynchburg, actually Forest and a long time asylum inmate...
I do quite a bit of work primarily on tube, though also on vintage transistor units as well, purely as a hobby. (though a rather consuming one)
If you're mainly needing a recap and some cleanup, I could definitely help you out.. email me if you're interested or want to chat.

I have been looking for someone to go through it but haven't found anyone local. Looks like I need to widen my search. I'm near Lynchburg, VA if anyone has recommendations. I'm pretty comfortable with my ability to recap the speakers but not the receiver.
The specs state -- POWER OUTPUT: music power: (4 ohms) 140 watts, (8 ohms) 100 watts; continuous power each channel: (4 ohms) 60 watts, (8 ohms) 40 watts at 0.6% distortion.
I have a vague memory of it sitting on top of the credenza complete with walnut-veneer case before my dad built it in -- which is why I think it had a case at some point. But that was many years and moves ago. :)
With 40 watts rms, it likely is the S9900 integrated amp. I have one that is being worked on to make sure it is up to snuff.
Terry Dewick has done a s3300 for me and has my S9900 in his shop for work. For my original set I had Warren Bender do the work but it is a part time job for him and he had o room when I bought the 2nd set so sent them to Terry. Terry is well known and respected.
I had Warren work on a Sony receiver earlier so it was just his name that popped up first so why he got the 1st Sherwood system. I've been happy with his work but you need to co-ordinate with him as he has limited space.
When I get everything in-house, I'll have 2 S3300 tuners, the S9500c 20 watt integrated amp and the S9900a 40 watt integrted amp. I'm still on the lookout fr the S9000 65 watt superpower amp from the series.
Yeah, I like them that much.
I'd seen Terry's name mentioned elsewhere but thought he only worked on Macs. I really like this receiver and plan on keeping it so it's worth it to me to have it done up right. I can't even find the correct service manual for it -- my serial number falls in between the two versions I found.
The vintage bug has bitten. I haven't been to GW for years but am now planning on stopping in whenever I'm in town. If I see a S9000 I'll let you know!
