Somewhere in the past there was a thread reviewing all the contact cleaners and enhancers out there. The thread said you had to be very careful about using them. I can't find this thread.

Hey... I'm in the same boat. I have what's called paralysis by analysis.
Every-time I hear someone swear by one, another person says it sucks and will leave residue etc..
I'm particularly interested in cleaning copper, if that matters.
Maybe use whatever and then a final clean with alcohol to clear any remaining residue?
If it loose copper parts and connections-I soaked my Cardas binding speaker terminals (solid copper) in a bowl of white vinegar .It removed all of the discoloration and looks good as new. Brass, too. Got the info off of Youtube. No side effects. Cheap.

Don't be Skeered....
For large areas this works nicely:

For connectors, relays, breakers, etc. use this:

For controls such as pots, switches and contacts on test equipment or "audio gear" this was/is still the preferred:

After spending years in industrial electric / electronics they were always the go-to cleaners to use.
It sucks to get old. It really sucks to get old and bitter.
