..just wondering if anyone knows..... I have a Y connector from a Sony Walkman digital player (3 1/2 mm) to 2 RCA's. Plugged them to my Ayre preamp's RCA inputs (whole system is totally balanced XLR)....no sound.
Follow Ups:
Oh Wow, Man...
Thanks Jonesey..... when I plug earphones into the 3.5mm jack of the Sony, I get great sound. I checked the Y connector with multimeter, and get an indication that there is no break in the wire to both RCA's. The Monitor switch is in the off position.....the #2 input connects the internal phono preamp on XLR connection witch sounds fine. I was using #1 balanced connection for CD which sounds fine. The RCA inputs are labeled 4,5,6....no sound from the Sony from either....again all balanced inputs are working fine....no hum, no distortion, etc. Do I have to run my amp single ended to permit the RCA's to work?
Having an unbalanced single end source connection should work regardless of the preamp/amp connection.
Looking at your set-up, do you have any RCA interconnects to try either you Ayre Music Player or your Blu-ray player audio out? At least then you can ensure the pre-amp is fine.
Cheers!

thanks Jonesy. I connected my blueray via RCA's and it PLAYS!.... Great suggestion....now I know the preamp is fine, but the cable I was using was faulty. I'll get another from Amazon and will surely be good to go. By the way....there was a huge sound difference between the Panasonic blurray and the Ayre silver disc player....of coarse.
Great stuff!
Just to be sure, you're using a 3 ring 3.5mm plug going into your player that splits to 2 RCA plugs, correct?
The cable can be checked with a multimeter against this diagram I found.
Or another thing to try is if either of the left or right channels will only work if plugged in separately.
Cheers!

Thanks for the diagram.......when I used my multimeter for continuity in the Y connector, it buzzed (ok).... it is new, but must still be bad. I'll get another and try it out.
Oops, sorry, I should have also mentioned to check for cross wiring or shorts in the cable. When testing any type of cable, be it AC, speaker, interconnect, Y etc., you have to also make sure you don't get beeps when the probes are on spots where you shouldn't have continuity. I've even come across products wire backwards. Hence the diagram.Hopefully the new cable will work fine.
Cheers!

Thanks for your interest....K1xemp
I assume you're plugging into left and right pairs of either 4, 5, 6 and respective listen control know positions S1, S2 or S3.
Also check the AC output at the RCA ends of the y connector with a multimeter. You should get a reading when music is playing.
Cheers!

I'd guess you already know about corrosion, especially on unused jacks and connectors. Sometimes it's pretty bad and takes some friendly persuasion to establish a good pathway.
