Now that I live with others I find less time to listen. Though I could, I just decide to be polite. But last night I hit up a movie I had DLed years ago and watched it. It sounded good. I know it is not accurate sound but it sounded good. But then it was putting out like 300 Hz. (I am pretty good at guessing the frequency)
Something rattled, and it was the most annoying thing ever.
Unfortunately now the listening space is in the basement and is near the furnace. Most of us know how easily excited sheet metal can be.
Maybe I should glue some carpet to it ? Damn, I would have to do the sides of the furnace then. Well it might make it more efficient really, like when you wrap a hot water tank.
Anyway, I didn't really ID the source of the vibration but I will. I got a function generator. Just set that baby to sine wave and turn the knob, find the resonance. Actually it might be the kitchen table down there.
Some of you might call me unter, but mind you this. There were many years in my life that when I did not like some speakers, which meant those one note pieces of shit ones, like at those tent sales. We had one, it was called Ohifio. But there were speakers, usually ported ones, that I refused to have in my listening area because I could tell how they colored the sound.
Stick that in your pipe, flick of the Bic Sir ?
I was serious. These assholes don't believe you when you say SHUT UP because you are about to give this vinyl half speed master its second voyage through stylusland. But when you cock the gun they do quiet down considerably. They respond less vigorously to a large knife. Either way they STFU and the music can go on.
Anyway, should I really consider carpeting the ductwork on the furnace ? Doesn't sound like it would hurt anything. Those things pump heat, not store it, so they don't really get hot like the old days.
Anyway, this is just a minor irritant but GRRRRRRRR.
Thank you for attending my rant.
Follow Ups:
I have a rattling heat radiator in the corner of the room. It drives me nuts sometimes. :(
Heat resistant and does what you want. Start with a couple of sheets from eBay and go from there.
On my new car did all of the doors, trunk compartment, engine hood, and trunk lid. Love that stuff. Even gas lid cover. I took noise measurements inside my car before and after. Very effective. Ended up putting leftover material inside a preamp metal cover.
Do you really think you should wrap a furnace and ductwork with flammable carpet?
Wow.....
To much caffeine this morning ?
Coffee laced with Lysergic acid diethylamide.
