My idea would be to use a buffer, so the two channels would not be connected to each other... By adding an inexpensive preamp which also has a mono switch. Then you can take the output, and mono it through the extra little preamp and use that signal to run a center channel. One bonus is the volume control in the extra preamp allows a separate level control. (still mainly controlled by your primary preamp) This item could also be a integrated amp.
Another way would be to use the stereo output to a stereo amp and TWO speakers in the center. You could even have the two channels in the same speaker box. If you make your own, with just two wide range single drivers, one for each channel blended in the center I think you would still want a separate volume control for it.
