The OP could have a lagging power factor problem. Could.

And in the case of the OP, living in an old apartment building in Brooklyn, he may want to consider some voltage surge protection to protect his audio equipment. Especially if the laundromat on the first floor is fed from the same utility power transformer as the tenant spaces. Though that would not be the only reason.
He might ask the Super of the building to have his electrician install a whole house SPD (Surge Protection Device) on the mains of the electrical panel that feeds the branch circuits of his apartment. The OP would have to bare the cost of course. He should also consider secondary SPD protection at his dedicated 20 amp branch circuit duplex receptacle for his audio equipment.
