His blog post on his website of today:ON ILLNESS
11/8/2015
0 Comments
As you know Stu has been quite ill recently . Fighting the illness has not been easy and sometimes the doctors are of little help, requiring a lot of research and info from friends and workers in the field. The bottom line, of course is that there is no cure I knew that two years ago (+). The end is coming appreciably closer, not that I expect to die is a few months or so but within a year (retirement) or so seems reasonable,
To that end ADL will see a transition. No more repairs until we clear up what we have. Equipment that we own will start to be liquidated and sold off. Not all immediately, but slowly as we can accommodate it and as health persists.
I am truly sorry to report this but I must face the facts, and all things point this way, unfortunately...

Stewart always said, it does no good to keep 'secrets' but best to share with the audio community.
Going off topic, I wanted to share of one instance that he told me a couple of years ago, in that while he was at a CES show with a lot of Stereophile and Absolute Sound reviewers in a listening room, all others were shuffled out for a private listening session.
They thought Stu was with one of the magazine staff writers so they let him stay for the session. Other people in the room after listening to some songs said something was just 'not right', but could not pinpoint what the problem was...without saying anything he went to the back of the sound system and changed the polarity of the cables, and then the reviewers were shocked at the improvement!
RIP Stu - you will be sorely missed!
R.I.P. Stu.
I'm sad to report that Unclestu's fight has come to the final stage. He's been hospitalized since Thanksgiving. There's no hope for recovery, these are possibly his final days.
Presently ADL is closed. Will not do repairs anymore, but I will keep you updated what happens with Unclestu's heritage of equipment and LPs.
Thank you all for your kind comments, I will relay them to him.

Oh man, so sorry to hear this. If you do communicate with him, please send him my regards along with all the others from his friends in the asylum.
So sorry to hear.
Yeah, I dropped by this past late Saturday afternoon (knowing Sat was by appointment only)--saw the 'open' sign, but when I opened the door, it was locked...left a voicemail too but didn't hear back from Stu...
i am at a loss of words to say how I feel about Stu's quickly deteriorating condition ... he knows it as I have told him so in the past that I don't have anyone else to see (since I've been a loyal customer since '85) who will perform mods/tweaks!
Unfortunately, for the time given he is still in hospital. He is pretty weak but always cheerful and positive.
For the time being the store is closed. However, his health is very delicate and he will not be able to do repairs and mods at least for a while.
I have been his apprentice for the past 15 years, and he taught me his mods and tweaks and a vast treasure of arcane audio lore.
However, I have a very packed schedule and very little time at the moment.

The entire audio community in Honolulu is saddened by the news of Stewart Ono's passing early this morning. But, as Stu wrote on the Audio Directions blog on Thanksgiving, "I know many are appalled at my going, but don't grieve. I've had so many pleasant experiences sharing music and my love for it with you all.... Enjoy your music!!!!!!!!" So, that's what all of us will continue to do.
My deepest condolences go out to his family and all of his friends around the world. Rest in peace, my good man. You'll be missed big time.
I'm so sad to read Unclestu passed away...
I read a lot of forums all over the planet and he was the only one to share so much knowledge about tweaking!
2 days ago I finished his BGT and wanted to thank him for the amazing improvement it gives...Too late!
Now we have to keep all his tweaks like treasures and if we're lucky enough continue to be inspired by his thoughts!
Rest in peace Stu!
God bless you uncle stu. You tirelessly have given to this community but its too bad we never gave enough back.
It is a sad day in the audio community. RIP Uncle Stu. You will always be remembered.

Stu's website blog indicates he's reduced his posted shop hours to a few hours in the afternoons on Wed, Fri, and Sunday due to fatigue and his terminal illness.
Hang in there- Stu.

Stu is a real gentleman in the true sense of the word, and I am very sorry to read here of his decline. One can only hope that his condition will stabilize, so he can enjoy life again for at least several more years.
In the summer of 1990, I paid my first visit to Audio Directions Ltd., then located on the garage floor of a building on Waialae, not far from the Palolo McDonald's. You have to understand that, in those days, audio store staff were snooty, and would only cater to people who looked rich.So here I was, 18 years old, just having finished my freshman year of college. Yet, Stu took the time to demo Simply Physics Tonecones. Stu understood that, of course a penniless college kid wasn't going to buy a $2500 amp. But if you take care of him now, in due time, he will eventually be in the market for $2500 amps.
Stu played two LPs, Skid Row's debut album and Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance. I *think* the system comprised a VPI turntable, CJ electronics, and Vandersteen speakers. But that's beside the point. Stu was one of the rare personnel who did not outright dismiss us poor folk.
I actually did buy from him AQ Little Feet and a Sorbothane sheet, both of which worked wonders under Discmen. In future summers, I'd return to Honolulu, and make a point to see Stu at ADL. He tried to give his honest take, and never pressured customers.
For me, if it were not for Stu, who knows how long it would have taken, to get out of mass market electronics, and into high-performance audio? I still can't believe that that summer of 1990 was 25 years ago. To this day, I recall it as clearly as I did back then. With Stu's AQ Sorbothane under my D-10 Discman, I played Vio-lence's Oppressing The Masses and Forbidden's Twisted Into Form .
I've always wished Stu the best, and continue to pray for him.

I am sorry to read this. I had hopes something positive would happen and Stu would be around much longer.
I would like to second that. I have learned and implemented a number of his solutions to obtain better sound out of my system. Stu, hope you get better.
but Unclestu being Unclestu he seems to have a realistic and pragmatic grasp on the situation.
I send prayers and well wishes to one of my favorite posters on Audio Asylum.
He has been a fount of wonderful information, wisdom and help for a LONG time here!
