I have a Sony XDR-F1HD. My wife wanted to buy me a component I did not have; she had trouble finding an HD tuner that was just a tuner, and not a receiver, radio, all-in-one. I've had a number of tuners over the years and I think this one is the best all-around. Sensitive; low noise; excellent imaging. Sorry it's not available any longer from Sony. It's a winner. I use it with a McIntosh 240 amplifier, Wharfedale Linton speakers, connected via rotary swith and ALPS volume control to the amplifier.
Follow Ups:
I have been listening all week to KCNV on my XDR-F1HD. Sounds lovely! I sit it on top of a muffin fan to keep it cool and just using a simple TV antenna and get 3 HD signal strength bars and perfectly quiet in the silent moments.
I can get away with the ugly wiring because I kicked the old lady out about a year ago :) Highly recommended for blood pressure control!
This week I may pull my Mac MR-77 out of storage unit and do a side by side listening comparison.
I will probably sell my MR-77 in the spring when inmates have their tax refunds burning a hole in their pockets.
Don't wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.

missed out during their short "lifetime" on the market -- and they're too 'spensive now.
I did -- for whatever reason ;) -- pick up a used Sangean HDT-1 a while back. It had a weird problem as received: it would work for about a minute, then slowly fade away. Long story short: when all was said & done, there (apparently) was a loose ribbon cable connection on one of the boards :-p
I reseated all of the plug-in connectors when I (finally) popped the top, and... well... Bob's your uncle!
Das Ding an sich.
It works fine (now) and sounds pretty good to me on the -- literally -- one station I/we routinely listen to: 89.7 MHz WVPR-FM atop Mt. Ascutney (which is visible from some of our loftier neighbors' properties).
all the best,

It's surprising how they learned to "do more with less" regarding FM tuners, just about the time FM listening began falling out of favor.
My Sony XDR-F1HD is as good in most RF aspects as my McIntosh MR-78 is. Sound quality is another matter though.
