Looking for a modern fm tuner. Don't want the hassle of having vintage tuner aligned, plus shiny silver face is out of character with rest of my system. I currently have a '90s Rotel RT940ax tuner.
Is the nad c427 fm tuner good? I want great sound w/ the many nearby college stations and improved reception on a distant college station.

quite a few people have posted useful advice for you. Please read my second last post about the MD ST2 and the order of effectiveness of antennas and the radio itself.
Did you read the FAQ article here at AA about FM sized wire rhombics in your loft?
eh?!

I thought I've responded to posts with saying huge antenna not acceptable, someone saying st-2 is low output. My question was about a different tuner.
Improving reception of a distant station is an antenna requirement.

That's a consideration. The Dynalab ST-2 would work in out living space and not be obvious hidden behind a curtain.nI don't think it would address better sound quality, but I may be wrong.
You may find the the St-2 is worse than the dipole. It has less gain, no matter the claims.
Do you have a loft?

The spread double rhombic in the article might cover all your transmitter directions. And, use FM Fool site for those.
I'm very lucky to have just two stations I care about, one's small repeater is behind my 7 element antenna, but by less than 1km, and the other is > 10km away, but powerful!

"You may find the the St-2 is worse than the dipole."
Totally agree. That has been my experience.

In fact it is a pleasure-boat 2-way radio antenna. Why is it that so few people get that an antenna is the most important part of a radio system, and has to be suitable for the bandwidth?
AND that the tuner / 'radio' is second in importance?
The OP has had this pointed out before!
One more thing? Magnum Dynalab, is a 'marketing'* driven company, and does not make valve tuners. The valves are used for line-output audio-signal duty.

I'm not sure I understand how to make that antenna. If the ST-2 is low gain maybe I should keep my dipole. I can tweak the reception by moving it slightly.

I've looked at the silver ribbon antenna but not sure if the size has a place, but I reconsider it with my wife and current decor.
Keep the dipole-
Go to FMFool.com - type in your Zip Code, Elevation for the antenea and see what your polars are - aiming the dipole will have a huge effect-
Timbo is ON the Money - a Rhombic is the best - and the instructions are in the FAQ section
THere are better tuners then the Nad - even SS-
Kenwood Trio
Sansui - 700 and 900 series
and don't forget the MR-74

The rhombic antenna is huge so not good in our townhome, and vintage tuners would be out of place in my system. That is why I'm looking for something more modern. I can't take over our living room w/ a stereo system.
Did you look at the article in AA's FAQ here?!

I'm sorry, but that huge antenna in the family/ dining area of our small townhome is not visually acceptable.
not on your ceiling!!!!

What a great tuner. It doesn't come with remote, so forget it if that is what you want. I thought about building a button pusher, but what's the use?
An asylum member had a bad experience with this tuner, so if you are in a static prone lightning area, I guess beware.
I would have no idea how to get this tuner repaired. However, the light bulbs often need replacing. I finally replaced mine with LEDs.
I can't imagine a more fantastic sounding tuner though.
Hi mjcmt,
If you're not totally against the Rotel's you may want to try a TU-990bx, a much better unit than what you have now.
And if the Rotel's are not you cup of tea you might consider any of the better Denon's. Something like a TU-767 if you have first adjacent issues, or a TU-800 if you want/need something more selective. The TU-650rd would be another good choice if you want RDS info on the display. All units are available in black.
Enjoy the search and good luck.

Thanks HA for the better Rotel and Denon models recommendations. I look into these.

Pretty good, a bit dry sounding and could be airier.
NAD sound to be within the vicinity of Rotel sound, dry and not as liquid sounding as some vintage FM tuner unit with the same price point. But what I like about NAD is it'll never fail to receive and lock in a nearby FM station even if you're using a rabbit antenna.
As long as they're designed and executed properly the only way an FM tuner goes out of alignment if it's been drop or ran over by a truck. The only exceptions are the older tube tuner as is due to its own design topology with tubes acting as rectifiers and what not can sometimes be out of alignment over time. Replacing the tubes can sometimes fix this problem.

That's the sound of mid fi SS tuners often. I was an NAD dealer and never was thrilled with them.
I never met a tube tuner I didn't like for audio quality although they have other challenges.
I've heard wonderful solid state but it costs more.
