Do you read about your equipement or do you listen to it?

what's the best configuration & why.
If I'm forced to order an amp deafly, I want to nail down some irrepressible facts. I'm continually learning the hard way that my tastes do not fit the constituative mold, as the items I desire are quickly deemed obsolete for more popular inadequate designs. But they are usually measurably different by Physical design. Thus, if I find a truly superior design, IMHO, time must be of the essence. Because its total shelf life will be measured in months.
Why do they build hybrids whose majority consist of a tube in & SS out. Apparently, to reduce (interconnects & speaker) cable dependancy as well as (Z & back EMF) driver issues.
What still bugs me is matching a current-source & a voltage-source in the same circuit. Thoughts of tank-circuits w/PLLs in the biasing & low-Z signal bleeding from both devices sounds quite non-linear. But, I'm sure this is very design sensitive.

the best way is to listen-intellectualizing your stereo doesn't work, unless you dont rally care about the music, or you think it all sounds the same. At some point, you will have to actually listen to it-published specs wont tell you how something sounds.

If you cannot borrow one, buy one on a 30 day trial period. Thats standard.

PS, since you're not a tube fan, why post on the tube page?
1) The mear size of a the tube's following, makes me believe that I've been missing something. And like you, I don't want to miss anything that might improve the sound that I'm hearing. Everyone here indicates that all tubes are different, which sounds like a mixed bag. On one hand, there just might be a tube fixture that doesn't require a mortition. And on the other is a sinking feeling that there is something inherently wrong with the device that may vary that much for almost no reason (or, @ least it seems nobody bothered to find out).
2) I like tubes in drivers that aren't "dynamic". It has been my limited experience, that the more the driver excurts the duller the sound. The tube seems to compress & soft-clip the sound to give it a very artificial plastic sound. But on the bright side, tubes seem to preclude most dynamic problems (echos from horns, ringing in metal domes, tweeter diffration, conical breakup, port booming, and XO IMD).
It's not that I'm banging a drum against "tube usage". It's more that I'm on a quest for clarity for both amps have pros & cons. I'm looking for a better blend than that's touted. But to do this I've got to learn. So, I sit @ the feet of the tubers, and learn their POV. And in this way I may find the "pot o' gold". Anyway learning is great fun, even if it's humbling @ times. What do you know, a double blessing.
For your deft use of the English language and for consistently butchering the technical aspects of audio, I dub thee the "Norm Crosby" of audio. Congratulations!
Cheers.

Yes. You have been missing something if haven't heard a properly setup tube amp.

Not sure what you're getting at here. Think you could rephrase a little?

From my listening, the musical intruments sounded more real than they did on SS. High frequencies do contribute to detail, but the quality of the midrange will will have a greater affect on the musical presenttion. In general, tubes reproduce midrange better than SS. Have you gone to the web site that I posted under Scott Woebcke's post? There is some theory there as to why tubes have a great sounding midrange.

Are you talking about hybrid amps? Kinda confusing statement here.

You are just going to have to experiment yourself to see what is right for your tastes. You can't quantify and then experiment. You have to perform the experiment first and then quantify your results.
Have fun,
Tom S.
He has no interest in buying or even listsning to decent tubed gear. I don't personally care if he listens to tubes or not(and he wont) He's just jerking our chains. He apparently has been asked to leave other sites. If he continues to play games, he'll get deleted. No more games, no more warnings.

Maybe I'm too forgiving. If things do get worse, I'm sure you won't hesitate to bring the hammer down hard.
Have fun,
Tom S.
