It's handy to have a double triode like the 6SN7 and one that sounds pretty good. But is it inferior to a couple of 6J5 types?
- the 2C22/7193 is probably the crown jewels of 6J5 types
- the 6P5 is very nice sounding, successor to the 76, 27, 37, 56
- some of the 6J5 family were very good, especially the G and GT versions
So is a 6SN7 a compromise? What do you think?
Follow Ups:
They are just a good or may be even more refine.
When you look at cct's post WW2 manufacturers would regularly use dual 6J5's in lieu of 6SN7. I've always wondered whether this was for reliability or a supply reasons ?
Cheers Johno
I am not sure if one outperforms the other. But the 76 or 6P5 definitely outperforms both.
2C22/7193 has 2 top caps so needs a bit of gardening, but I'd put it above the 6P5 even.
And it is a mu=20 tube like the 6J5, with more power available. Dissipation is 3.3W.
Andy,
is the top cap 6.4mm diameter for 2C22/7193, cheers Johno
.
Thanks
Yes Andy very nice tubes. I've been cleaning out a storage unit lately and found a box of
50 or more of these I bought back when they were still relatively unknown and could be had
for very cheap. I've moved on to nothing but DHT's now so probably will end up selling them someday.
By the way there are adapters available that will plumb 2 of these down to a 6SN7 socket
If anyone is interested in comparing them.
