My phono preamp uses a 6X4 rectifier. The first one I popped in after the old one went bad after 3 years (preamp sounded dull) created a physical hum in the unit as I mentioned in a thread below so I've replaced it. The new one works for an hour and then emits what I would call mid-range tone from one channel. Wiggling it slightly changes the tone some, but it doesn't go completely away. So is that also a bad tube too or it it time to figure out what's making this happen?
Follow Ups:
A phono preamp is an extremely light load for a 6X4. The rectifier should last many years. Can you post a make and model of the preamp, or a schematic?

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
If the rectifier tube was faulty, the problem would be heard in both channels.
Ok, so tomorrow I'll swap the WE417A from side to side and see what happens.
So the problem was not the rectifier tube as you pointed out it wouldn't be. It was one of the input tube sockets. Simply swapping the tubes from side to side helped clean the contacts enough to make a good connection and the noise and hums and tones are all gone! Problem solved, although the tube socket could use replacing I'm sure :) Thanks so much for your help!

6X4 are only a few bucks each (about $10 or less on auction site); have you only got one? Have you got a schematic for the unit and a DVOM? Check the voltages one channel to the other to see if there is an anomaly on the humming one to track down the fault. It is unlikely that the rectifier would create a hum in only one channel.
