After many years of battling illness, Patrick Turner, the Canberra based valve/tube technician, builder and operator of turneraudio.com.au (a wealth of educational info on in-depth valve theory) passed away this week.
Those of us that knew him personally, and those who had interactions with him online will know what a character he was, and how willing he was to share his knowledge and advice.
I'm still somewhat stunned by the news. I knew how ill he was and that the prognosis was not good, but Pat always came across as an unstoppable force of nature.
Somewhere out there, Pat is now lecturing the notables of the audio world with how they got things wrong and why they shouldn't have cut corners.
You are missed already and the world is poorer for your passing.
Godspeed and happy listening.
Follow Ups:
Saddened to hear his passing. I knew he was gravely ill and that staff at the hospital were amazed how well he was able to get on with his cycling. I last heard from him in January and then all communication stopped. He taught me a lot about output transformers.
It still has to sink in that he is no longer around, I have his email exchange saved and copied his website. It is something I cherish.
Rest in peace Patrick and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Marinus
That is exceedingly sad to hear - as I have emailed him a few times a year for the last 5 years, but no response since January.Patrick certainly didn't hold back with his views - which was part of his charm. I think he would have really liked to see his practical theory and design translated/integrated/distilled/databased in to a computer tool, but transformers and especially output transformers are a fickle friend to work with. To his utmost credit he did not shy away from putting the hard yards in to seeking out contemporary design information, which underpinned his efforts and allowed him to grow his experience and expertise. And Patrick did not shy away from getting gunked with floor varnish if that is what it took to make a good winding.
Even more sad for me is that I never got to meet him personally.
Ciao and vale, Tim

Very sad! RIP. I hope that turneraudio.com.au would continue to enlighten and help.
Very sad news indeed. His website is one of the best in the world for information and ideas.
