Hi! I'm about to change the 6922 tubes on a counterpoint preamplifier. Any suggestions on brands? I´m looking for the best mid and highs possible. Any comment on J/J and electroharmonix? Thanks!
Follow Ups:
Love the Counterpoint tube gear!
One of the finest sounding 6922 type tube is the BEL/Philips E88CC - Philip parts assembled in India on Philips manufacturing platforms. Alot quieter than the USA type tubes - usually -82DBV or better,
These sound great and are not insanely priced - seen them at Upscale, On Agon, and at Tube Amp Doctor.
Many thanks!
Any idea how to set up the bias on the SA 5.1?
The best 6922 I heard are RCA 6922 gold pin with Made in Germany marked on box with black ink. There are early 1960s Siemens.

Which Counterpoint and what are you using now?

The SA 5.1. Have for years and years of trouble free enjoyment. Some of the tubes are original counterpoint!
Welcome to Audio Asylum.
I purchased a new Counterpoint SA3 in the 80's, then upgraded to the SA5. I am happy to say it has never left my system.
The SA5 and SA5.1 are almost identical, with SA5.1 being slightly newer.
Both versions came with 6DJ8 tubes. The Counterpoint branded tubes in my preamp were made by Mullard.
6922 is the more rugged version of the 6DJ8. If you want to go that route, and purchase new production tubes, I would whole-heartedly agree with the others to go with either the 6922 Gold Lion or JJ gold pins. The Electro-Harmonix 6922 is a quiet and rugged tube, but very flat sounding to me. (Or perhaps neutral would be the kinder word.)
Cheers!

I had an SA3000 for nearly 18 years. Given all Mike Elliott's upgrades he put into it for me, I figure I paid for that pre 3 or 4 times over. Served me well until I moved to Acoustats from Vandys. The ESLs really accentuated the 3Ks short comings, so out with old and in with something better.
Secretly, the whole time I owned the 3K I wished I'd bought an SA3.1 instead. The 3.1 and the 5.1 have really stood the test of time. Classic all tube designs.
I always drooled over any of the Vandy or Acoustat speakers when they came out.
I didn't know what I was getting into at the time, but about 5 or so years ago, a store owner/friend asked me to rebuild a couple of mono power amps using upgrade kits.
For sure I said, because then I would get to try them.
Turned out they were Acoustat Servos.
Because I knew I couldn't audition, I dawdled and ending up returning them. Then I saw the speakers/cabinets at the store. OMG they were huge and not the ones I thought at first. No wonder the amps and cartons of tubes/parts upgrades intimidated me!
Cheers!

7000 volts will get your attention in a hurry. Working on them can be very humbling.
I've only done minor surgery on mine. I leave the serious work to Mike Savuto of Analogue Associates. He knows those servos front to back and top to bottom.

What about going the other route?
Is the Mullard 6dj8 the one to have?
Thanks.

Yes. Based on old stock tubes, the Mullard 6dj8 is a favorite of mine. And should I ever run out of them, I hope current production recommendations of 6922 Gold Lion or JJ will work out.
Here is a list of most of the tubes I have on hand and tried...
6922/E88cc
Siemens
Valvo
Electro-Harmonix
Sovtek
6dj8/Ecc88
Siemens
Telefunken
Amperex Bugle Boy Small O, Large O, and D Getter
Amperex Orange Globe O Getter and A Frame
What's interesting is that I never knew my original Counterpoint branded tubes were Mullard until I happened to come across them again in my stash some 30 years later.
I have never tried any of the CCA Telefunken or Siemens. Nor any USA made 6922/7308 tubes. All out of my reach now.
As an aside, the Amperex BB Large O Getter are my favorite signal tubes in my ARC D70 amp. Sometimes you never know until you try.
Cheers!

Gold Lions are hard to beat if you are talking new, I favor Sylvania 7308 NOS. Works for me in my gear.
Without music what is there?
My stash of Bugle Boy 7308s and 6922s are gone. I was pleasantly surprised with the Lions when it came to retubing.

I'm using them presently at the gain stage of my Sonic Frontiers Line 1. They provide good detail and extension plus moderate warmth and holographic effect, at least on my device.

I'm using them on the output stage of my Anthem Pre 1L.
Wow, much better than the JJ I had before.
Thinking about the input stage now and, I suppose, that is also considered the gain stage (but I don't know).
The JJ, IMO, smokes the Russians.
However, the JJ's can be hard to find right now - especially their gold pin 6922. As I understand it, JJ undertook to retool their 6922 line a couple of years ago, and in the middle of it the covid showed up. They've been significantly delayed in getting the line back up and making consistent product. My sincere hope is that once they're firing on all cylinders again that the sound doesn't change for the worse.
Also, often labeled ARC or Tesla. I use them.
