I had an old Mullard GZ34 with a 1/2 long vertical crack about midway up the envelope.
Out of curiosity, what would be the impact of that crack expanding, opening, and allowing the tube to fail while in use?
No...I'm not tempted to try it. It's in the trash.

I think this needs to be considered next time :P.
Hope it wasn't an older high value version GZ34 :).
If the crack in the glass goes through to the inside which allows air to enter the tube then it's toast. If it's a scratch on the glass and the vacuum is intact then perhaps the tube can still be used...
Yeah....it's an early one. The crack isn't all the way through. The getter flash is fine.

Sorry to hear/see that pic of that nice 5AR4.
That crack looks pretty bad, and definitely not a scratch/score on the glass - with the heat/cool cycling I, too, would be hesitant to use it.
