My amp uses the 12at7 as input tubes. Can I use the 12au7 in its place? I know the latter has lower gain so does that just mean the tube will work but I have to turn the volume up more?
Or will the lower gain potentially damage the amp?
Thanks.

I think Eli D. is basically correct, but I would like to add that there are a lot of 12AT7s out there in the world, and without trying them out, there is no telling which ones are going to work best for you. In short, you may find that some relatively inexpensive NOS really work well for you.
As a side note to that, I would ask that you think about how little the price of a desirable set of NOS 12AT7 tubes actually represents in comparison to the cost of all of your audio gear. I find that cheaping-out on tubes in the signal path is poor economical thinking. YMMV

6201 is an exact sub. Supposedly extra rugged. They make great phase inverters.
Just use 12AT7s! The 12AU7 is non-linear and its electrical parameters are dead wrong. While damage is unlikely, poor performance is all but certain.
If the price of OS 'T7s makes you wince, try JJ's current production variant. Good things have been said about it by somebody quite knowledgeable.

Thank you.
