Bored with trying to find driver tubes I liked for a 2-stage 300b amp, I decided to turn the amp around and use a DHT first stage into an IDHT output stage, in this case an EL12n with a mu of 18. This allowed me to use a DHT first stage with a mu of 8-10.
I'm really pleased with the sound of this amp using 10Y or 01A DHTs in the first stage. And I contend that I get more of the DHT sound this way. When I use a 10Y the amp sounds like a 10Y. When I use an 01A it sounds like an 01A. So in my case I say the input tube has the most influence on the sound. This is so even when the mu of the output tube is double that of the input tube.
In the case of my 300b experiments I could never get it to "sound like a 300b". It always seemed to sound like the input tube, which in this case was a much higher mu than the 300b.
Follow Ups:
I was hoping the inputs would.
