Recently picked up an amp that has 6 x 6550C output tubes; 6350 driver tube and 12AT7 input tube per each monobloc.
Of the three, which tube set impacts the sound the most?
Input? Since that's the first part of the process?
I'm hoping it is since it's a lot cheaper to roll the input tubes.
Thanks,
Mamoru

All I know is what people tell me, & about 25 years ago Andy Bowman, of Vintage Tubes, told me to get it right up front & then work my way back. Meaning do the preamp & then do the inputs of the amp & then do the outputs.A dozen 6550s? I betcha those things rock & roll!

If those are 6550 SED winged "C"s, I would leave those alone and play with the other tubes.
Still, I'd be curious what make the other 2 tubes are? Hard to recommend when it's unknown.
I'm assuming it's for the VTL MB-185 Series II's you just purchased.
Nice amps!

Yep. The MB-185 Signatures.
The outputs are 6550 winced c's.
The driver is a Sylvania 6350 and the inputs are two different ones. One is a Mullard and the other is a JJ(?), I believe.
I've got some reissue Mullards, along with some Psvane 12AT7s enroute but won't be here for a while.

Nice! It will be good to have matching input tubes on both monoblocks. Enjoy the tube rolling.

The input tube on my tube amp made a huge difference. Don't know how this applies to other amps. It was a 12AX7 in an EL34 Anthem Amp-1.
Bored with trying to find driver tubes I liked for a 2-stage 300b amp, I decided to turn the amp around and use a DHT first stage into an IDHT output stage, in this case an EL12n with a mu of 18. This allowed me to use a DHT first stage with a mu of 8-10.
I'm really pleased with the sound of this amp using 10Y or 01A DHTs in the first stage. And I contend that I get more of the DHT sound this way. When I use a 10Y the amp sounds like a 10Y. When I use an 01A it sounds like an 01A. So in my case I say the input tube has the most influence on the sound. This is so even when the mu of the output tube is double that of the input tube.
In the case of my 300b experiments I could never get it to "sound like a 300b". It always seemed to sound like the input tube, which in this case was a much higher mu than the 300b.
I was hoping the inputs would.
