Wondering what the Quietest 6SN7 new production tubes are? I have 115db Horns and Ultra Quiet Pre-Amp tubes are desired. Also do you of a good source that will select these tubes based on noise? --
Follow Ups:
So you are inserting a gain stage where it is not needed. That will be noisy. You take a 2v input signal, pad it down to 0.1v so that you can amplify that back up to 1v.
I have Zero Noise issues with the 45 Amp, as long as my Pre-amp tubes are quiet... Pretty much the same with the 300B Amps, unless of course the pre-amp tubes are noisy, then the 300Bs will amplify that Tube Rush where it is audible at my listening position.
Go with the BEST sounding new production tube you can find, then...
Call a 'reputable' new tube dealer and have them hand select the QUIETEST tubes of that brand from their stock.
The 6SN7 is a low gain tube and I would doubt any good tube would be so noisy as to be detectable even with horns.
Power amps add a bit of gain and it THEY are noisy, game over. :-(
Not my experience with my 115db Oris Horns.... I have had new production 6SN7 tubes that produced a Tube rush sound from the Get Go.
Currently running Sylvania 6SN7GTB Chrome Dome Tall and they are close to silent with either my 45 or 300B Amps.
Currently using a pair of NOS Tung Sol Black Glass Round Plate 6SN7's in my pre which replaced some NOS RCAs I did not care for the sound of (some love them).
All of my Sylvania 'Chrome Dome' 'Tall Boys' are likely not NOS but 'pulls' that check good so I'll stick with the TS Round Plates.
I never had a noisy one.

Can I ask how sensitive are your speakers and What Amps are you using to power them?
Latest JJ 6SN7 are very quiet and decent sounding. Tube Depot will test them for low-noise and microphonics ($4.00 extra). They're slightly better sounding than new TS 6SN7s, IMO. Kevin Deal sells dead quiet TS 6SN7 (Platinum Grade), which are slightly, yet noticeably, quieter than JJs.
try 6SU7GT tubes, they are supposed to be quieter. Although based on my tests, they also show noise around -86 dB, which is the same as for example as a regular Sylvania 6SN7. New production, showed even worst performance with Full Music at -84 dB and microphonic, but EH Gold did as well as 6SU7, at -86 dB. 5962 didn't help with that either, measuring at -86 dB. Since 6SN7 is a low-gain tube, noise is not a major issue (if the tube is strong, the weaker the tube, the more noise), but microphonics are due to a large plate structure.
6SU7GT .... Isn't that a 6SL7 Equivalent Tube? -- I'm looking for 6SN7 tubes.
You are absolutely correct.
So, you're suggesting that I stick a 6SL7 tube in place of a 6SN7?
No, no. As in the previous reply, 6su7 shouldn't be used in place of 6sn7.
OK, I'm just trying to figure out why the 6SU7GT was mentioned in this thread about 6SN7 tubes ???
Simple explanation, brain fart. The older I get the more it farts.
nt
And a GOOD one.
Especially the Tung Sol round plated versions.
