Posting this for a friend with tube mono kt88 amps. He's running the stock JJ output tubes with good vintage input/driver tubes. Now he's wondering if he should try different output tubes or not. It's a little shrill and lean for him right now when using the JJ KT88 with higher sensitivity speakers greater than >87db. Four different pairs of speakers tested. It's been a while since I messed with KT88s, and I'm not familiar with what to recommend for him to try next, if anything else. Hoping maybe someone here has swapped from JJ to something else?Have you ran the JJ KT88 base output tube for a while and switched to another KT88 output tube...If so, what and why, and any benefits you can share, was it worth the change - ???

If the amp has problems the right way to diagnose it is to
check it's "basline" ( if bias correct adjusted etc)
Then continue with analyzing the amps performance , or even
trying to analyze all parts of the audio chain.
Changing compinents at random will only get random results.
( JJ KT88 is btw an excellenbt tube, but, as any tube it has a
limited lifetime. 4-5000h is the expected lifetime. How long have
they been in service ?)
I've got Gold Lions KT88's in one of my tube amps and Psvane KT88T's in another. I have a slight preference toward the Psvane's, but that's just me. I don't think you can go wrong with either as long as they're bought from a reputable tube seller. FWIW, I buy my GL's from Jim McShane. The Psvane's came from Viva. I also took a chance on the highly rated Shuguang Natural Sound 88T's only to see 2 fail within a month. Lesson learned, don't buy from low ball ebay sellers.
Shrill? I'd look at driver tubes first and not the outputs.
Although I do not use KT88s, by most every account, the ruskie Gold Lion reissue is the one to go with. I have heard that tube in a friend's PrimaLuna rig, and it sounded really good.
+1 different power tubes will not solve the problem.
... or you switch over to 6550 tubes. bit more "tame" and said to be more linear than 88īties. i tried them in my rogue atlas magnum and was surprised even though those 6550 were "only" cheap tung sol reissues.
N.
Just smile - it confuses other people.
To add more body to the sound I would recommend Genalex or SED (original winged C)
Thanks, on a related not about "difference", I changed from EH KT88 to Genelex Gold Lyon KT88 with my own my former Cary SLI-80 amplifier and the difference was notable, immediately, even before burn-in. In that case, it did solve a problem. Not sure on my buddy's amp, in this case.
He might try the Genelex KT77 or KT88 and give it a go. I have read a few place folks commented the KT77s were a little rolled off on the bottom end slightly but very musical and worth it anyhow.
I would start with KT88 Genelex, definitely a better choice if an amp takes KT88/6550. I didn't find that KT77 would roll off on the bottom, but it could seam that way just because it produces less power than KT88.
